On this edition of the Phil Naessens Show, we discuss Grantland scribe and NBA expert Zach Lowe's recent column on the Thunder now that Kevin Durant has been shut down for the season. Lowe's analysis is sobering, but is it sensationalized? Here is what Phil has to say:
Did the Oklahoma City Thunder lose their last great chance at a title?
That’s a good question. It’s also difficult to answer.
I believe they blew it when they traded away James Harden for Jeremy Lamb, Kevin Martin and a couple of draft picks (one turned into Steven Adams). That trade failed miserably and while health has been the main issue the Oklahoma City Thunder hasn’t returned to the Finals since 2012 it still has had an effect as the Thunder never adequately replaced Harden.
That being said when healthy this current Oklahoma City Thunder team is one of if not the most dangerous team in the NBA…..from both sides of the ball.
Whether people like to admit it or not Kevin Durant has plenty of options when his contact expires following the 2016 season but that’s just that; he still has another season for sure in an Oklahoma City Thunder uniform. Serge Ibaka and Russell Westbrook will also be returning and they have an interesting mix coming back as well.
If the Oklahoma City Thunder are healthy in 2015-2016 and they don’t go all the way to the Finals then you can start talking about windows closing…..until then let’s save the obituary for the day we see the corpse.Logo and artwork courtesy of W. Bennett Berry or on Twitter @bennettberry
