ESPN did a good job in their Outside the Lines program in remembering the trauma that OKC has experienced in their community due to the 1995 bombing of a federal building and how the mere presence of a pro basketball team has helped in the rebuilding process.
The team's impact on OKC is similar to the way I have read about the impact the Memphis Grizzlies organization has had on their own city as well, especially when events such as their recent flooding have threatened so many peoples' way of life. It underscores the very real impact a pro team can have on a small market team's community when the members of the organization sees it as a duty and opportunity to invest in the lives of the people around them.
