Seeing a Tulsa Shock Game, From a Oklahoma City Thunder Persepctive

Liz Cambage was nowhere to be found tonight. She was probably too busy flying in the clouds....

I had never been to a WNBA game before, and I was offered a free ticket. So why not? Last night I found myself taking the two hour drive to Tulsa to see the Tulsa Shock game.

As with any good basketball fan, I did some research before going to the game. I discovered that the Shock were 1-17, worst in the WNBA. Their roster seemed to be a mix of has beens (Sharyl Swoopes and Betty Lennox), will bes (Elizabeth Cambage and Kayla Pedersen), and never will bes. Nolan Richardson had just been replaced as head coach, and the Shock seemed to be under really hard times.

As I approached the BOK Center, I really admired the architecture. While the newly-christened Chesapeake Energy Arena looks like nothing more than your standard arena, the BOK Center looks like a unique architectural wonder, giving a face to the city of Tulsa. There were a good number of fans streaming into the arena, but once you got inside, you realized just how empty it was. I kept seeing the same faces walking around, something I can't say for Thunder games. But perhaps it was just my big-city mentality, not used to seeing a smaller sporting event.

As I entered the actual arena, I have to admit, there was a good atmosphere about the place. Even though this team was playing worse than the Pittsburgh Pythons, the fans who were there seemed to be pretty hardcore, and cheered louder than Laker fans do when the game isn't on the line. I sat in my seat to watch the teams warm up. I looked at the team in front of me, and they seemed to be really confident in what they were doing. They were doing layup drills, impromptu one on one games, and had a certain swagger about them. This couldn't possibly be a team that had only won one game the entire season.... And then, I realized. As I saw the "F" on the front of the blue warmups, I realized I was watching the Indiana Fever, while the Shock were warming up on the other side.

Sonicsgate Filmmakers Trolling the Thunder in Denver

The Sonicsgate filmmakers and other former Sonics fans continue to petition the NBA to bring back their team. Recently, they invaded a Howard Schultz book signinggot on local TV to discuss Clay Bennett heading the Kings' relocation committee, and went on Outside the Lines to discuss the Kings' situation.

I'm not too opinionated on this issue. I can see why the Sonics fans were rooting against Oklahoma City and hassling Clay Bennett in the stands, but wanting to do the same thing and rip another team from another city is just hypocritical. You talk about how all of the things Seattle did to try to keep the franchise in your city, and now you just want to create another situation for fans in another city.

Obviously, it seems unfair for me to comment on this issue, especially since I'm reaping the benefits of Seattle losing a team. But as we all know, an eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind. And historic franchises should not cite a couple of terrible seasons and use it as an excuse for leaving the city. I wouldn't mind seeing a city like New Orleans or Memphis lose their team, because they can't fill the arena even when they have a winning product. But going for teams like the Bucks, Suns, and Timberwolves? Come on.

But, I might just be splitting hairs. Regardless, I wish the best of luck to Jason Reid and the Sonicsgate team in bringing basketball back to Seattle.

How Russell Westbrook Stays Fresh: Part II

Ozarka: My Fresh Life with Russell Westbrook #2 (via WaterOzarka)

We continue to document Russell Westbrook's adventures with Ozarka water. They should seriously be paying me to post this stuff. As a side note, I now have a strong urge to completely bathe myself if pure Ozarka spring water.

Rumor Mill: Seattle Strikes Back?

Oklahoma_city_yard_dawgz_medium

Its not quite official yet, but it seems that the city of Seattle may finally be getting its "revenge." Reports indicate that an ownership group in Seattle (known as Force 10 Hoops L.L.C.) may be purchasing the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, an arena football team that moved from the Arena2 league last season to form the new revitalized Arena Football League.

I'm not trying to open any old wounds here, but the incredible coincidence here was too much to be left untouched. There are a few things I notice about this potential purchase in particular. Read More Below.

Adonal Foyle Retires from the NBA

I'm sure some of you have wondered who that glowing guy in my avatar is. Well, it's Adonal Foyle, my favourite player in the NBA. If you do know him, you probably know him as a defensively good center whose offense leaves something to be desired.

But he was always and will continue to be much more than that. He runs a camp in his home country to help kids learn to play basketball, and he founded an organization called Democracy Matters, where he tries to make public office more accessible to those without vast fortunes. He is also a big supporter of Read to Achieve and other NBA good will organizations.

This is a sad day in my life indeed. While he'll never get the ring I always wished he would, or made an All-Star game, the important thing is that his impact on the world will be much larger than that. While it's always fun to watch Adonal block a shot, badly miss a jumper, or clank a dunk, in 20 years, I guarantee you we'll talk much more about the things Adonal is doing to help his home country and democracy in the United States rather than his actions on the court. And deep down, I always knew that was why he is my favourite player.

FOYLE!!!!

Shakur released after 10-day contract expired

You probably didn't even notice and it probably matters not a whit in the larger picture of things (at least from our perspective), but it's on USA Today so kudos to Shakur for getting some press. He didn't play in a single game, and this release was to be expected given that he was there really as another warm body/depth backup.
