Oklahoma City Thunder waives DeAndre Liggins after arrest for domestic violence

USA TODAY Sports

The Thunder opted to waive DeAndre Liggins in response to his recent arrest and allegations of domestic violence.

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced today that they have decided to waive backup shooting guard DeAndre Liggins. Liggins was arrested on September 1st, 2013 and accused of domestic violence.

The press release from the Thunder was brief and to the point:

The Oklahoma City Thunder waived guard DeAndre Liggins, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti.

Liggins appeared in 39 games for the Thunder during the 2012-13 season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.4 rebounds in 7.4 minutes per contest. He holds career averages of 1.6 points and 1.2 rebounds in 56 career games.

Liggins had been slated to receive just over $884K in the 2013-14 season, but this contract was non-guaranteed so Liggins had to make the team in order to receive his contract.

According to the Oklahoman:

Jasmine Horton, who describes herself as Liggins' girlfriend, said Liggins hit her in the head with his hand and then punched her in the head when she fell on the ground, according to the affidavit filed in Oklahoma County District Court. The couple's 2-year-old son was in the room during the incident at their home, 2309 NW 180, she told police.

Horton locked herself in a bedroom before Liggins reportedly kicked in the door, pushed her down, dropped a fan on her, stomped her with his foot and dropped an Xbox on her head, according to the affidavit.

Horton had injuries on her arm and fingers as well as scratches on her back and bruising on her chest, according to the Oklahoma City police officer who wrote the affidavit.

Presti had previously stated that he was waiting for the facts of the situation to come in, and now it appears that the team had sufficient reason to cut ties with Liggins.
