2013 NBA Free Agency: Oklahoma City Thunder sign Derek Fisher to 1 year $1.4 million deal

USA TODAY Sports

The Oklahoma City Thunder re-signed the veteran point guard to serve behind Russell Westbrook and Reggie Jackson.

On Wednesday, Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti announced that 5-time NBA Champion Derek Fisher will return with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 2013-14 NBA season. According to CBS Sports' Ken Berger, the deal is a 1-year contract worth $1.4 million, the league's veteran minimum and about all OKC could offer him.

Sam Presti said in a press release:

"Derek has proven to be a valuable member of our team and we are excited to have him back...He has such a positive impact on his teammates and the organization."

Fisher will presumably act as a third-string point guard behind starter Russell Westbrook and backup Reggie Jackson, but the 39-year-old could also see time at the shooting guard position, a role he has played in the past two seasons during the Thunder's playoff runs.

Fisher was signed in the middle of last season and played 33 regular-season games for coach Scott Brooks. Fisher averaged 5.3 points and 1.4 assists, and shot 37.5 percent from three-point range. During the playoffs, his playing time increased following Westbrook's meniscus tear during their series win over the Rockets. Fisher provided surprising production by scoring 8.7 points per game and hitting 47.1 percent of his threes over the course of 11 games, but the Thunder fell to the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2nd round.

Fisher has played for Oklahoma City in the past two seasons, but in both years he was acquired mid-stream. In 2011-12, Fisher began the year with the Los Angeles Lakers, but later finished with the Thunder during their run to the NBA Finals. Last year, he began the year with the Dallas Mavericks only to leave 9 games later and subsquently sign with OKC once again. For this third outing with the Thunder, it will be the first time that Fisher will have an entire season and training camp to work with his old/new teammates.
