OKC Thunder Trade: Byron Mullens Traded to Charlotte Bobcats
Darnell Mayberry is reporting that the Thunder have traded back-up center Byron Mullens to the Charlotte Bobcats for a 2013 2nd round draft pick.
Thunder Trades Mullins to Charlotte | NewsOK
The seven foot center has been used sparingly by the Thunder over his first two seasons, as he has struggled to crack the rotation. The Thunder were hoping that Mullens would round into a player similar to traded center Nenad Krstic, but Mullens was not able to take the next big step in his career while wearing the Thunder uniform.
By trading Mullens to the Bobcats and not taking any player back in return, the Thunder gain:
- A free roster spot, with which they could fill down the road
- A trade exception of approximately $1.38 million

It is hard to be sad when we really never got to see him play
The Thunder roster is just too jam-packed, so a very raw Mullens was just never going to get any meaningful minutes to try and improve his game.
We know that he is a pretty athletic center who has a decent medium range shot, but the question remains, if you’re an athletic 7 footer with a good shot and you’re NOT getting any minutes, the obvious question is, why not? We wrote up an end of season review of him here:
My guess is that he tried to matriculate too quickly in his career and he hasn’t yet learned a lot of the nuances of the game. Hopefully reasonable expectations and a new city will give him a fresh outlook on his professional goals. Since he only cost the Bobcats a 2nd rounder, he’s probably a good low-risk gamble for you guys.

He's been the 12th man for how many seasons now?
He should finally get some playing time in Charlotte which will be good for him.
