Josh Smith
Talk is buzzing right now about the Hawks are offering Shaq the MLE for 2 years, wanting to slide Horford to the PF and thinking about trading Josh Smith to semi-makeover the team. Otherwise really they are just bringing back the same team as last year and having paid Joe Johnson 6/119. We have talked about how this team needs a big and I have never bought that it must be a 5 man because I think Ibaka can grow into that and now we have Cole and BJ (probably more of a 4, but has the size) as well. Josh Smith to me would be an excellent addition to this roster in that he is 24 (25 dec), has experience, huge athleticism, very good defender, hard competitor. This past season he set career highs in FG% (stopped shooting 3's), stls, rebounds and assists. I dont know what it would take to get him from Atl but I would be very intrigued. Cant imagine what a combination of J-Smoove and Iblacka would look like on the defensive end. Thoughts?

My first thought is that I’d sure feel sorry for Atl fans. Overpaying JJ, picking up an over-the-hill Shaq, and getting rid of Smith. Ouch.
Well, it seems like a move that would require at least Green and Maynor, or Green and Harden. I’d think about the former. But I’m not sure the deal wouldn’t be too expensive for what they’d want. Very interesting though.

well they just drafted teague last year so not sure they would want maynor and having JJ for that much along with Jamal Crawford for at least 1 more year not sure on Harden either. Jeff I would assume cause he could play 3 for them, or 4 if they go back to Horford at the 5. Moves Marvin Williams to the bench. that’s the toughest part in considering this that have no idea what they would want. I would think a high caliber pg and while maynor could be that he isnt much ahead of teague right now.
im thinking maybe NJ w Devin Harris or something like that, but I dont see how trading him helps them. should have signed and traded Johnson

That'd be great.
He’d probably pull a hefty price and more than he’s worth in this market but the thought of Josh Smith and Ibaka with Aldrich at 4 and 5 and the defense that would come with it makes me a little wet.
Probably Josh Smith for Maynor, Green, and Collison
I do not know if OKC does this though because of the great chemistry this group has and also the effect it would have on the future of Westbrook and Durant
Fuck the Lakers...Oh sorry the Fakers
Ridiculous.
I would be against any sort of deal like this for either side.
For the Hawks, I am constantly hearing about how much they need a center. I don’t agree. The hawks front court is essentially Smith, Horford, Pachulia, and at times Williams. This is a good unit. They don’t have such great size, but all are 6"9 or better. Al Horford is a good center. Horford himself has complained that he would rather play PF and have some more size alongside him in the lineup, but so what? The bottom line is that this is an effective unit. Sure, they struggled against Dwight, but so did a lot of teams. The idea of downgrading personnel just to get ‘bigger’ seems so completely ludicrous to me. I am not saying that adding some size wouldn’t help the hawks, I just don’t think you send away one of your best players who is also young and on a fair contract to do so. What boggles the mind is how infrequently you will hear about the Hawks need for a PG relative to the C chatter. The hawks desperately need a PG. Bibby is nothing but a spot up shooter now and Teague (say what you will about Mike Woodson) did not play well in his rookie season and would have to make a huge jump this year just to be rotation worthy. They are literally trotting out replacement level talent here.. They could have had Hinrich FOR NOTHING. That is an actually decent NBA pg and they are gonna go into the season with Bibby’s decaying corpse and jeff teague. Anybody home?
For the Thunder. I just don’t like Smith. This may sound strange because I just argued he was too much to give up above. The fact is, Smith has a lot of talent, but he is a total headcase. That talent makes him a necessary gamble for ATL because they can’t get equal value for him. For the Thunder, it doesn’t make sense.
how do you figure they could have had hinrich for nothing when the reason the bulls gave away hinrich was to clear the cap space while atlanta didnt have the cap space to take that hit. I dont know why atl is considering dealing smith, but if they are we should be involved. I didnt realize you knew Josh Smith to call him a total headcase because all the reports by people who cover the NBA spoke highly of the maturation he did in the last year on and off the court.

hold on there..
I am not saying that they could have taken Washington’s place in the Hinrich trade, I am saying that Hinrich was available without needing to send any assets to Chicago. A third team would potentially need to be involved to work out the cap issues on Atlanta’s side. My point is simply that PG is the real need for ATL, a much much bigger need than center. There were options for improving dramatically at that position and ATL did nothing.
As for Smith. You are right that he did show some maturation last year, but he is still a headcase. I am only talking about basketball so I have no idea why my knowing Smith personally or what he does off the court are at all relevant. He still takes way too many jumpshots and takes off many plays per game on both sides of the ball. I cannot think of a player in the league who exhibits a bigger gap between what he could be and what he is. Don’t be fooled by the numbers, I watched nearly every Hawks game last year and Smith is downright lazy and there is no stat to capture how often he doesn’t hustle back on defense or simply stands out at the 3 point line on offense.
I've been salivating over j smoov
Ever since I heard he might be on the table but a) I don’t think we have the assets necessary to acquire him and b) if we do, it means gutting the roster of at least three of our rotation players, which is something I find very hard to believe that presti would pull the trigger on. Jeff green, harden and the clippers pick would be the minimum, I think. You’re then left with a fairly gaping hole behind sef ( we’d be depending on petersen or cook to perform, which isn’t a good situation to be in), you remove two of the key chemistry guys on the team (I’m not so big on chemistry, but it’s undeniable that removing green and harden would have a huge emotional impact on the team), and, in the clippers pick, you lose a pretty big key to keeping the team affordable and competetive in the long term. Much as I like smith, this seems like a lose-lose to me.

As much as I think Josh Smith would put the Thunder over the hump of being a good
team to being a very good/great team, I don’t think trading any of our guys is worth it. Like some have said before, chemistry might be an issue with Smith. This team’s chemistry is great now.
