by RoyalsFanStuckInCardsLand on Jun 24, 2010 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

Aldrich is a good fit

He can dominate the paint and he needs to work on his free throw shooting.

Peterson is an expiring contract which is either trade bait or he’ll add some depth at the 2. I see him as a three point situational guy.

I DO think the Thunder gave up too much if they had to take on Peterson’s contract, but holy moly you guys act like the world is ending.

The Thunder still have a solid team. Hasn’t Presti build a solid team so far? Don’t you trust him to make smart decisions.

he’s a probably 6-10 or 6-10.25.

He won’t need to “dominate” like he did in college. He’s got good instincts, good bball IQ, knows his limitations and strengths, he is already ready to contribute at 250 lbs. He’s got very good length. He’s a good passing big-man. He can actually score as well. He needs to work on his offensive game but he should be able to contribute defensively and on the boards immediately. He’ll bring more toughness/edge to the C position than Nenad.

Loud City via Far East
boredaroundtheworld.blogspot.com

by rickpidero on Jun 24, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I second most of this

Aldrich isn’t terrible. He’s not the flashy piece of Cousins or even Monroe that people were hoping for, but we all know that Presti puts a huge premium on defensively minded players without crazy off-court issues.

We’ll know better once the whole thing plays out.

by Spencer Pan on Jun 24, 2010 7:54 PM CDT up reply actions

everyone wants a flashy sexy pick

a guy who can do backflip dunks, etc. Look, the Thunder have plenty of stars and scorers. They needed a guy with a good basketball IQ who positions himself well around the basket and can rebound the ball. They just got that.

People fall in love with a pick and don’t trust the GM who’s built this team from a cellar dweller to a highly competitive team.

Yeah

exactly. This was about locking up a solid post center. You are right, the Thunder have guys with bright futures at every position now.

I know Ibaka is sometimes listed as a center, but his game is more that of a 4, or a bench guy who patrols the paint in defensive situations.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

We'll see

Not a fan of the trade but Aldrich isn’t completely worthless. He doesn’t need to be super athletic…Howard is the only insanely athletic C in the league.

We also get a ton of manuverability with 4 expiring deals.

by ThunderHorn on Jun 24, 2010 7:54 PM CDT reply actions

And 21/26 is a good deal

Since we’d otherwise be on the hook for that salary anyhow. We needed to consolidate the picks and this is as good a way as any. And 21/26 is going to be stashables or a flat shot in the dark.

Is Aldrich the worst player? No. Obviously not. But I don’t think he was worth what we’re giving up (and taking on) for him.

I said in the other thread, he can be solid, but I think there were better options.

He doesn't fit in

With the athletic culture the Thunder have been building around the last few years…

by GoHornsGo90 on Jun 24, 2010 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

then i guess he stands on the defensive side while everyone else runs.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 8:07 PM CDT up reply actions

That might be better

Than the offense that the center position generated last season. And more space for KD, Russ, and Harden to operate in!

by GoHornsGo90 on Jun 24, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

same can be said for both Cousins and Monroe, neither tested better than Aldrich

by ThunderHorn on Jun 24, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Tests...

Whatever, just watch them play. Monroe and Cousins are far more athletic players…come on now.

by GoHornsGo90 on Jun 24, 2010 8:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Neither looks far and away better athletically. I’ve seen them play a ton.

by ThunderHorn on Jun 24, 2010 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

They can certainly run the floor better

And are just so much more fluid and natural on offense…

by GoHornsGo90 on Jun 24, 2010 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly

Go look at the verticals, lane agility, and all other measurements of speed. Aldrich’s downside is his offensive production (or lack thereof) and concerns about lateral quickness.

by Spencer Pan on Jun 24, 2010 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Kansas Players

always have reduced offensive numbers in college because the level of talent overall is much higher. that’s why aldrich’s numbers went down last year compared to the year before, because the rest of the team improved immensely. you’re talking about a guy who was playing with definitely two and possibly four other nba guys almost the entire game

by PhillyJayhawk on Jun 24, 2010 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Aldrich will be a very good post defender. He can rebound at a high rate, he’s got good length, very high bball IQ. He plays within his strengths. He’s more than athletic enough, I believe he tested pretty similarly to Cousins and Monroe at the combine.

He can actually shoot a bit as well so he won’t completely clog up the lane.

He’s got good shot blocking instincts as well.

by ThunderHorn on Jun 24, 2010 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

Everyone overreacts

when their team doesn’t take the guy they fell in love with

The Thunder will be fine. Not sure Aldrich will be a starter but he’ll be a solid rotation player.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 24, 2010 9:06 PM CDT reply actions

Ok I have calmed down a bit and have a few thoughts.....

The fact of the matter is we need a big man and some bench help. Were actually in a very good situation as the main thing we need is AGE AND EXPERIENCE. Next year we will another year older. I’m sure all of the guys will have another year of offseason strength and conditioning under their belts.

No one and I mean no one can predict how any of these centers will turn out. Presti took yet another big man. I’m sure in hopes that 1 of these guys turn out to do something. Presti hasn’t made a bad decision yet IMO.

I think we all need to remember he knows far more than we know about these guys as it pertains to their health, attitudes etc. After July 1st we will have the best player arguably in the entire NBA locked up for quite sometime. We have a great arena, fanbase, and practice facility not to mention a solid Head coach. Contractually were still doing really well. We have an owner that is dedicated to winning and giving us the best “show” possible.

Almost every team in the NBA would like to have what we have in terms of talent and facilities. I think we as fans are trying to “force” winning a bit, when in reality we should take a deep breathe and let things happen naturally. Presti will get us there….. I believe in him!!!

I would sleep with Blou if it meant the Cubs would win a WS. by Doggie Stalker on Aug 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT

still a 51st pick

That is more than okay with me. Brilliant draft once again by Sam Presti. I think some of you guys value the picks in the twenties too much. Most of those players drafted in the twenties are gone after a couple seasons because they dont make it…

yes i used brilliant.

Look at what we had? a bunch of late round picks that were most likely going to be players who wont make it in the league and gotten 2 more proven nba guys (keep in mind he can still trade them in the offseason) along with Aldrich. I’m surprised that so many people are going against Presti here. Do you guys forget what he built? I also want to note that I’m not just going along with this because I love Presti- I actually like Aldrich too.

Sheesh...

I kinda figured that there would be a little bit of disappointment coming from folks here after reading the draft posts for the last couple months, but some of the backlash here is crazy.

“Worst draft ever.”
“I’m in physical pain right now.”

Give me a break, did the drug store run out of Midol or something? I’m happy with how we’ve made out so far. I think we’ve definitely improved in relation to the competition tonight and that’s what it’s all about.

by belt on Jun 25, 2010 2:57 AM CDT reply actions

That was mainly Go Horns.

You basically quoted him twice. EP’s worst draft comment was mainly brought on by the Spurs (a team he hates) picking up one of his favorite picks (Anderson). Just like they did last year with Blair.

I’ll admit that Aldrich wouldn’t be my first choice, but I think he’ll be a solid addition in the long run. We got two bigs with Cole and Tibor, plus a perimeter shooter with Cook. I’m happy.

It was brought on by Satan's Spurs taking Anderson

I’ve always hated that team.

I didn’t watch the second round, so I’m actually trying to catch up on what we ended up with. Reading through here, it seems like we did get Pleiss?

Will someone write up a summary or point me to someplace so I can see what we got.

And for the record, I think Aldrich was a reach, but as I said before, I think he can be a solid pro, just not spectacular or what I wanted. That being said, he’s a Thunder now and I hope he has a great career.

Also, can we get rid of BJ now? We have our tall, white guy quota filled. What are we, the Jazz?

Haha

I guess you’re right. I thought was just cherry picking but I guess I did pick them both from the same guy. My point still stands though because there’s very little good said about Presti and the draft yesterday.

I’m not trying to heap praise on Presti like a lot of people are today, but I think it was a successful night with a weak draft class.

by belt on Jun 25, 2010 11:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Bought Pleiss at 31. There were rumors that Pleiss wants to join the team next year.

The Nets will send this pick to the Hawks, who will turn around and send him to the Thunder. OKC has been high on Pleiss for a while. He is big and long and plays very active defense. He isn’t a great offensive player yet, but he’s a good player to stash in Europe for a few years.

Bought Latavious Williams with the 48th pick. Which is interesting because Alabi, Ryan Richards, and Willie Warren were still available.

Williams is the first player ever drafted from the D-League. He’s an excellent athlete and a good rebounder with a strong motor.

Drafted Magnum Rolle 51, then traded his rights for the 57th pick and cash. (likely to pay for Pleiss)

The Thunder have traded the rights to Rolle to the Pacers. Rolle is one of my sleepers. He’s been slow to develop, but he’s a good athlete and rebounder. The fact that he’s already 24 years old is a red flag.

Drafted someone Ryan Reid guy with the 57th. I doubt he’ll ever join the team. Per Ford:

Reid averaged 6.8 ppg and 4 rpg as a senior at Florida State. He’s a physical player at 6-foot 9 and 235 pounds.

solid draft IMO

I feel as though we def. addressed our major holes. Pleiss will either go overseas for a few years or he will come now and compete with Aldrich, Ibaka, Collison, etc for time at the 5. All that competition will improve our big men so much. However, i dont think that we will be hanging on to Collison much longer. He has been great for us but has a very valuable 2011 expiring deal and many of those who missed out on lebron his year will be waiting til 2011 to make a splash. Also: i see us keeping cook but either buying out mo pete or trading him elsewhere. Cook is a very underrated move we made. Cook can come in with no pressure to be a scorer. With our current team, we can put the ball in the basket for sure. Cook can come off the bench and make threes for our team which was our second biggest hole last season. Next, i love the move to acquire a future first rounder from the clippers. Sure, it may turn out to be an end of the round pick if the clippers end up snagging lebron or someone else and improving tremendously but history shows that holding a clippers pick in the first round is an excellent asset. But what i liked most is that we went out and got Aldrich. He honestly did not cost us that much and we were able to obtain a true 5 who can do what we need most despite the fact that he def wasnt the sexy pick we were all dying for. Aldrich can come in, rebound, plug up the lane a bit, block shots, and make a low post move. Next to Ibaka, i feel as though we have a good low post tandem that can compliment Durant, Harden, and Westbrook. Call me what you want but Jeff Green should now be our super sixth man. Just think: Bringing in Jeff Green with the second unit, where he can be the focal point of the offense, holding down the fort while giving KD and Russ a rest! He could be a more consistent, younger, OKC version of lamar odom. That could scare some but think of how great that would be! However, Presti is far from done making moves before the start of next season.

by kpugh on Jun 25, 2010 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

He has to make moves

because we don’t have enough roster spots. White and Weaver can’t be sent to the D-League, and he seems to want to keep Pleiss here, rather than Europe.

I think Mo Pete is going to be bought out. White and Weaver are gone as well.

Either Collison or Krstic could be on the way out as well.

PG-Westbrook, Maynor
SG-Thabo, Harden, Cook
SF-Durant
PF-Green, Ibaka
C-Krstic, Aldrich, Mullens

That’s an 11-man rotation, and Brooks typically only likes to go with a 9-man rotation.

Follow me on Twitter (Kevin Durant does!) @electricpencils

by ElectricPencils on Jun 25, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

We can have 15 roster spots.

I feel either Mo Pete or Kyle Weaver is going to leave this summer. Maybe even White if Presti wants to sign Latavious Williams for this upcoming season.

I see Mullens as Krstic’s replacement. Aldrich could be Collison’s replacement as well. I think Presti will wait a couple months into the season to see how those two are working out before moving Nick and Nenad’s expiring contracts.

I would really like Pleiss to come over, but it’ll likely cost us Weaver.
