Possible answer at the 5 for OKC not even in draft?
I have heard a rumor that the thunder could possibly make a move to trade for the rights to Tiago Splitter (rights held currently by the spurs. The spurs have the full MLE, possibly more but may not have the cash to sign Splitter anyways and the spurs obviously do not just want to see Splitter walk (rumor has it he is ready to make the jump to the NBA). Splitter could be the longterm answer for the thunder at the 5 position and he could possibly come cheap enough due to the fact that although he is a stud, he is still unproven in the NBA. IF the thunder looked to obtain Splitter, the cost could be very high and not just what they lose in the trade. They would likely lose one first round pick, one or both second rounders, plus a player like white, collison, kristic, etc. Then once they signed Splitter to a 4 or 5 year deal (IMO the way to go if we sign him) they would most likely be letting go of Jeff Green somewhere down the road. Although that would be a substantial loss, what we gain in the process would be worth it if Splitter is legit which i think he is. The thunders starting bigs would be set: Durant at the 3, Ibaka at the 4, and Splitter at the 5. Then we have Westbrook at point and can choose between the offensive minded Harden or the defensive minded Sefolosha at the 2. With our remaining pick(s) in the draft, we look to fill in holes. IMO by making a move such as this, the thunder could be making an even bigger jump than last seasons. They could easily be the darkhorse for the NBA title next season and many seasons to come.
One thing is certain: Presti is building something truly special in OKC. It is a joy to watch, speculate, and discuss this truly exciting organization. Draft night and the rest of the offseason for that matter are going to be a wonderful thing to get to spectate. I cant wait to see what is ahead for this great team with an even better future! Go Thunder!

i would love to add Splitter depending on the cost but he is definitely a PF not a C. If we are talking about moving up to get a big Monroe is clearly the one to target but to get him we might have to go all the way to 5 which would mean giving up not just picks but probably a roster player.

Tiago is a 4? Why so?
He is 7 ft and 245. Sure he is not a banger, but he definitely center material.

measurements dont make you a center as for instance Dirk is also 7 ft 245 in his listing and he isnt one. Could he play minutes at the 5 sure, but I would still consider him a PF. I think Ibaka is our center of the future so it is not an issue to bring in Tiago and let them play together.

I doubt we can land Tiago, but I'm sure someone is going to exploit the situation.
Perhaps OKC can help. Since Tiago will likely want more than an MLE, the Spurs can trade his rights to a team with cap space. Have that team sign Tiago then trade him back to the Spurs. It sounds dubious, but I think this is allowed.
If a team trades a player’s draft rights, they can reacquire the player during the same season.

The other team could then try to acquire George Hill, DeJuan Blair, the 20th pick or maybe even more.

At first I was trying to work OKC into that picture, but I don’t think we have enough rosters spaces to make that trade worthwhile. We likely wouldn’t be interested in Ginobli, Parker, Jefferson, or Duncan. So S.A. would have to clump together McDyess, Hairston and either Blair or Hill to match the trade value. I don’t think Presti would be interested, but I think New York would (especially if picks were involved).

do you think the spurs would really want to replay the Scola situation again?
i would think if they are going to deal Splitter it would be to move up in the lottery or make another team take on a bad salary they need to dump.

Jefferson.
I feel as though it is imminent that the Spurs will look to trade Richard Jefferson. He obviously did not work out for them and is making too much for what he is currently doing on the court. Rumor has it that he could be considering opting out of his current contract. However, if he were to do that, he would most likely be doing so bc he is unhappy about where he is because he is due about 15 mil next season. SO if the thunder were to sweeten the deal by offering to take on RJ’s contract plus Splitter’s rights in exchange for the likes of collison, the 26th and 32nd picks, the spurs just might bite. I am fairly certain that they want to rebuild just a bit (not a total makeover) and will need the cap room to do so. With this move, they would be able to ditch RJ, pick up young bodies in the draft, have a reliable veteran in Collison, and would have more cap flexibility. What does this do for us? We obviously gain the biggest prize in the rights to Splitter. We also gain a scorer off the bench and a highly valuable trade chip in Jefferson. With our remaining picks we go after the best big or scorer available with our first rounder and then go after Ryan Richards in the second round. Once we sign Splitter, we can then look at a lineup of this:
pg- westbrook
sg- harden
sf- durant
pf- ibaka
c- splitter
Then just imagine a second unit that had maynor as your facilitator, sef as your lockdown defender, a scary combo of green and jefferson as your slashing forwards, and richards or another big to grab rebounds and get garbage baskets. Throughout the season, we can look to trade jefferson for picks or a cheaper vet and then look to sign durant n co to extensions.
The downsides are obvious: Durant would have to wait up to another year for his extension which could upset him, Green would most likely be moved to the sixth man position, our cap room would be temporarily shot, and Jefferson could be about as useless in OKC as he was in TX…Plus the spurs could turn down every single offer we throw at them and even if they couldnt sign Splitter and had to renounce his rights, we would be competing with at least a dozen teams for the soon to be star center. However, it is worth speculating and discussing IMO bc of the payoffs it could produce.
i like it...
but, it would make me nervous to not sign Kd as soon as possible.

Spurs
How would this trade affect KD’s extension? He could still sign one, the extension wouldn’t kick in until next season.
not to mention that you can go over the cap to sign your own players, so it has absolutely no impact.

The best option of the bunch
Would seemingly be to end up with Monroe or Cousins. Of course that depends a lot on who we’d be giving up … and the likelihood of such a thing going down is so dependent on various things all aligning, that it’s pure conjecture to even discuss it.
Monroe
seems to be flying up the draft boards tho.
