This season the NBA cap was at 58.7 mil and the fear mainly due to the economy was that the cap for the 10-11 season would drop to b/w 50 and 53 mil. The announcement was just made that the cap will be set at 56.1 million which is still lower than this past year but significantly higher than was anticipated. This gives the Thunder approx 16 mil in cap space if Nenad elects to exercise his player option at 5.8 mil as I would expect he will. After the two first round picks if they stay at approx 19 and 26 that should leave them with approx 13.5 mil in cap space. I know the sexy name out there is Bosh but I dont see him as the answer to what this team needs to take the next step. I have said before that a player like Louis Scola is an ideal add to this core, though I am sure Houston will do all they can to keep him as an RFA. At the Center position there are guys like Brendan Haywood and Marcus Camby out there as veterans for the relatively short term, but I have been very pleasantly surprised with the speed of progression from Ibaka that I wonder how much a defensive presence if fully needed but we do need another rebounder.
The bigger need for me is a low block scorer with all the slashing and running we can do the post up player is the major lacking piece for me in the half court and would open things up more for our slashers if we had a guy who command a double down low. I havent seen it discussed too much on here but the best scorer in the post who is going to be out there this summer is Carlos Boozer not to mention he should be cheaper than a Bosh like alternative. Just throwing that out there.
If we stay where we are in the draft I would look at Gani Lawal and Quincy Pondexter as a potential inside player and a long athletic wing who can shoot really well. Paul George and James Anderson are a few other 2/3's that could be out there around where we pick as valuable bench pieces. I know the inclination is to say we have to draft a big but we have Ibaka and two bigs we are already attempting to develop in White and Mullens, so another project big isnt a huge draw for me.
In terms of our own guys I know there has been some speculation with the uncertainty of the CBA they might wait on doing new deals with KD and Jeff until it is sorted out a cap/salary structure is finalized but 12:01AM on July 1 KD should be offered a max deal regardless. If the uncertainty means they wait the summer on Jeff then I could understand that, but get KD's John Hancock on that extension ASAP.
