What are draft possibilities?
I am a big sports fan, but admittedly basketball is probably the sport i know the third most about, ahead of hockey. I know the thunder have two firstt round picks, and i think most would agree that the should probably go Center with atlased one of them.. Who are some people they could be there for one of those picks, and would it be possible to trade up and get a more highly touted center. trade up into the 10-15ish range or better if possible, or down you use both. I would think with the youth already on this team it would make more sense to draft One better player, than two late first rounders who would need more developement or add youth depth, because The thunder already have enough youth. A few years ago. i decided that i wanted to become a real fan, not just a causual fan, and i didnt want to be a bandwagon fan, so i decided to choose a team, who wasnt already great, who possibly was somewhat close, and with a young player i believed in. I ended up wanting to decide between Portland or OKC, and i was on the Durant side of the fence before the draft. I really liked him hence i became a OKC fan, and i live in STL ... okc is about as close as any other NBA city..
Any body who can give me more intelligent idea of what could realistically happen in the draft, or any actual names would be appreciated, thanks

I agree
that we have more draft picks than we need. As it stands right now, both of our number ones will be outside the lottery. I’m fully in favor of trading up for a center, or trading picks for an established center.
You’ll hear a lot of different opinions here, but basically the top center prospects coming out are, in no particular order: Cole Aldrich, Demarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors and Greg Monroe. (Some of these guys may fall into the PF/C category.)
There is also a foreign dude who I wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole and Solomon Alabi from Florida St. who should me a mid-to-late first rounder.
I’ve thrown out the name of Tulsa’s Jerome Jordan, on occassion, but he didn’t progress as well as I hoped he would this season. He’ll go in the 2nd round, but I don’t know that I’d want him in OKC.
I can’t think of anyone other than Chris Bosh as a big free agent, but I’m not too high on him for our team.
Also, I don’t want to discount the progress of Serge Ibaka. He’s really starting to come into his own as a defensive guy.
So, that might help get you started. Dig around online. You can find lots of info and opinions.
And welcome to Loud City!

i think monroe from the talk he was making after the loss to ohio is strongly considering going back for his Junior year.
I dont like Aldrich; Cousins and Favors are probably top 5. If we keep our picks i would look at Gani Lawal though i dont think he makes it to the 20’s this year; Quincy Pondexter (size, shoot, rebound) as a backup 3 and a Varnado in the 2nd round (i believe we have minnesota’s 2nd) as a shot blocker. Ekpe Udoh is a name rumored to be around the 20-25 range from Baylor.
We dont need to trade picks for an established center Haywood is a FA this summer.

Then again
At some point who knows. If we’re in the 20ish range, Pondexter or Avery Bradley or any of the other names being tossed around start looking intriguing.
Why can’t we go back to the old rumor and filch good ol’ JaVale McGee? Joking aside, Aldrich would be good if we didn’t have to give up much to get him.

Basically if we have an opportunity to snag one
of the better looking prospects there’s no reason not to. Cousins and Favors are both going to likely go very high, so unless we’re trading something else that’s not going to happen. Aldrich as well. If any of those should fall and it looks like we can package our picks to move up to snag them, I’d say it’s worth a look. Further down, I wouldn’t mind taking a flier on Alabi and just letting him develop. Currently he’d probably fare about as well in the NBA (or worse) as Thabeet has.
At the point we’re projected to pick (20th-ish) it’s a crapshoot anyways.
how about...
Craig Brackins from Iowa State? His stock took a dip this season. But, that could be attributed to a week team, especially guards.

or maybe he was hurt by being a jump shooting big that hit 42% of his shots who shot 1 3 for every 2 foul shots.

I doubt very much
that a starting center is even in this draft, save for Cole Aldrich. Cousins is a borderline PF/C, but if you guys are starting Jeff Green at PF, you need a real shot blocker/banger on the boards to give your frontline some muscle. he could be an offensive weapon, but not too much, since you won’t be calling many plays for him. a lot of guys could be had out there with this crazy summer coming up. I would think about picking up Roy Hibbert, Robin Lopez, Marcin Gortat.. somebody who’s not gonna break the bank on the trade front (you guys don’t have a lot of trade assets out there, save for your picks and backups + Krstic) but has potential and good size
Thanks for the names. I knew alot of them, but the ones i knew most about i knew were out of our reach. Frankly, i’m not really into putting money towards a veteran center, even at thier peak. I’d rather get another young one, watch Ibaka develope, Hope we get something out of B.J, err i mean, Byron Mullins, but try to find a center who we can develope along with Mullins, hopefully one develops into atleased a very good Defensive and rebounding center, and the other a solid back up… or hopefully score big and find a very very good one. I like Aldrich (sp) but hes prolly out of our reach. i don’t know hopw he’d end up being offensively, but i see him being very good defensively and a good rebounder. Also, i am not against giving the Florda State kid a chance, if G-towns bigman leaves, my bet is that he goes early, though i havent heard where he is expected to be drafted. either way, draft a big with D and Rebounding as their calling card. If you end up not being able to trade up, who do we use the other pick on?
Gtown...
big is Greg Monroe, i think he’s only 6’10 anyways, might just be a lazier Ibaka clone.

that is a lazy comment. Monroe is probably the most skilled big all around because of his excellent passing ability as a big. Other bigs have more athletic ability like Favors and Cousins has more pure size, but in terms of all around game there isnt a big i would take over Monroe

I...
was high on him for awhile, but not anymore. I think he’ll be a role player who floats through the league and never has a real impact. He has the skills, doesn’t mean he will utilize them.

that was true early in the year i agree, but he was much more consistent, aggressive and dominant late in the year, but i still think he is going back for his junior year so we shall see in a year, lol.

True.
if he stays- it’s all moot (sp?). he could have a crazy jump next year and prove me wrong.

I really don't understand why we're trying to draft a big man.
We already have Ibaka, Collison, White, Krstic, and Mullens. Drafting another big man would just be adding more crap to the pile.
In my opinion, I’d like to see a nice shooter off of the bench. Like a spot up shooter. Right now, we have a ton of scorers, but we have no shooters. It hurts us sometimes, like yesterday, when we shot 15% from behind the line. I’m not saying we need to have a volume shooter or anything like that, just somebody who can step in for 10 minutes a game and play offense.
Even if we move up, I just don’t see a big man being advantageous to anyone other than the 66ers. I’s much rather use those picks to try to trade for one, or try to sign one in Free Agency.

The question goes back to what
sort of value another big would add. Ibaka looks good, particularly from a tools perspective and when looking towards the future. Krstic and Mullens aren’t going to add much in the way of interior toughness, so most people look at the roster and decide that if we’re going to be playing an undersized PF we need to have a monster of a center. That’s probably not the case, but it probably wouldn’t hurt.
The fact that we need a shooter is obvious. We can’t stretch opposing defenses without deadeye outside shooters, and with Harden out we’ve been flailing. The question is — who’s available in free agency that would offer that tough inside presence that is basically the only reason we’d be in pursuit of another big? At ~20 you could probably add some very good shooting talent — for instance, Willie Warren looks to be on the board then, as does Avery Bradley if he declares.
by Spencer Pan on Mar 23, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions
i wouldnt call either warren or bradley great shooters. I go back to pondexter. 6’ 7" shot 53% from the floor, 37% from 3 and 83% from the line. Another shooter as a 2nd rounder is Jimer Ferdette from BYU who shot 46% from the floor, 44% from 3 and 89% from the line but he is another 1/2 guard.
I would go for Scola if what you want is a big who can score, look at what he has been doing since they traded landry and let him go. i think he is around 20 10 this month, will be an RFA can score with either hand, good post moves and extremely tough. He is not overly tall or a shot blocker, but that is where you play him with Ibaka or something along those lines.
by Michael Gleich on Mar 23, 2010 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Getting Scola would be a coup
Chances are however that the Rockets aren’t going to let that happen, but if there’s one person I’d like to snag this offseason, it’d be Scola.
I like Pondexter. Plus, he provides another hybrid defender who can rotate between guarding shooting guards and forwards. We’ll see who’s there at the time however …
i agree that the Rockets are unlikely to let it happen but he would be my target if there was one and worst case is if you offer him a deal and they match you dictate to a team in your conference what they have to pay him.

i agree we should draft a big just to draft a big as i said in the follow up to this thread. I could see Presti taking a foreign player, even a foreign big and stashing away one of the 1st or 2nd round picks for a later date.
by Michael Gleich on Mar 23, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions
People forget
That’s presti is trying to keep okc a power in the NBA for a long time. People look at clubs when they start winning and then ask “what’s the missing piece?”. Well the truth is we have many such as a pure shooter , great back up 3 , and a dominant 5. On a roster of 15 in a 9 man rotation we are missing a lot. So while everyone thinks presti will continue to draft great unknown international and young seasoned college players to keep OKC relevant. If presti makes a trade for a player it will me calculated far better than we even imagined ( like the chandler trade) and made when no one is paying attention ( like the maynor trade) . So I trully don’t believe he will make any trades before/during the draft. If he does please believe presti will keep at least one 1st round pick a a continuation of his “master plan”. I’m all for collecting tallent letting it build for another two years while KD RW0 and Serge become seasoned killers. Looking at the trailblazers you can see what happens when you rush and grab the missing piece way too soon( like Oden). Favorite or not KD was the better tallent and we all knew that when they picked oden. ( but I digress ). Presti once said he wants to build “a team of all PGs” or players who can handle and dish the ball fluidly … And I think that is what is he looking for ( which explains the mullens trade).
Bottom line just don’t expect anything exciting this year. Just know that in 10 years the thunder will be in the same conversations as the l@kers and the celts as great bball teams.. And that presti will NOT find a center this year becuase he has already found his experiments in serge and mullens and will continue to play with them like putty untill they fit the mold he wants.
How the hell did that happen? I am Trailblazer fan to the core but I love me some OKC THunder!!! Must be the Hometown pride I feel.

^edit^ : So while everyone thinks
That presti will package all of his pieces for one big they are wrong because presti will continue to draft….
Sorry guys thinking too fast !!

Yeah This is a very intriguing discussion
bloggers on this particular site are post very fluid, meaningful comments that add to the intelligent discussions.
I think the Thunder are in great position. They really can do whatever they want. They could trade their picks to a team with a lot of holes for future picks. They could trade both their first rounders for a top 15 pick in 2011 and draft rough guys with potential or euro guys. I think they should try to aquire Marco Bellinelli. He is a very good talent. He is a good passer, shooter, and when he was with the Warriors he was playing good defense. He could come off the bench with Harden and put on a hell of a show. He is a fan favorite too. He is always around 40% three point, and has raised his free through to 84%. Trade him for a late first rounder. Then of course they could pursue Anthony Morrow

There is no worry
hell even if they stayed exactly the same for 2 years they would be contenders just because of Durant, Westbrook, and Harden. They just need to add a shooter and a guy to do the dirty work downlow and then they are set. I do not know anything about college ball, so I will not act like I do. They should draft a dirty work big in the draft, its not like they do not have room to experiment in the draft, so why not. Because of their great potential and room to grow, I do not see the point and rushing the process by adding a Camby or trading for a veteran like that. Not that I don’t want the Thunder to win, but if they are so far into the process of building through youth why stop now? Its worked out quite well.
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
Sorry to keep blabbing
but do you think the Thunder would look into packaging Green and the first round picks for a top pick like Favors, Aldrich, or Ed Davis.
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
I could happen but not likely
Like him or not green is pretty important to this team. Never underestimate the need for a glue guy… and is just what Green is. The Bulls would most likely still be great but you cannot argue they weren’t made better by Dennis Rodman’s play. He pretty much did the dirty work and allowed for the others to do their thing. i think Green is the same way( maybe not game wise) but his impact is the same way. Soooooooo i doubt we see a green trade unless it is for an instant impact player like Bosh…..
I think we trade one first and Nick C. for a younger cheaper version and grab the BPA with the other three picks….

The problem with that thought
Is whether Favors/Aldrich/et al are actually upgrades to Green + picks. For instance, Aldrich doesn’t project to be much more than a defensive roleplayer at the moment, and further limits the Thunder’s ability to dump the scoring load on Durant. At some point it’s just as good to just take two shots in the dark and hope for the best — and keep Green to boot.
I think Aldrich would be an ideal fit for OKC.

and what at all does that have to do with answering whether he is worth jeff green and picks?

I wouldn't trade Green and a ham sandwich
for Cole Aldrich.
I wouldn’t trade Green at all.
I am a fan of Jeff Green and what he brings to this team.

fine true but then how about the 2 first rounders for a number 10 pick

Yeah
I could give a crap about the picks. I’d also give up Krstic.
by ElectricPencils on Mar 31, 2010 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions
yeah I don't think Kristic is good enough to play a big role
He is not a great scorer or shooter, defender or rebounder. I think they should trade to the picks to get something really good out of the draft
"Who Wants some pudding pops?, delicious and nutritious!
Honestly (as a Kings fan)
I don’t think there’s any way a team that is in position to take Favors would even consider Jeff Green + both of OKC’s picks. This isn’t the NFL where you can actually improve your team by having 8 picks instead of 4. 1 player makes a ton more difference in the NBA than the NFL and it’s important to keep that in mind.

Whiteside and Aldrich declare early…along w smaller players like Paul George, James Anderson, Domonique Jones.
Craig Brackins is late 1 at best after this year
Manny Harris and Sylvan Landesberg couple of presumed 2nd-undrafted also declared.
Tommy Mason Griffin is crazy too declare also.
