Another Draft Name to Look At

A variety of names have been put out there but i have another one that we should look at if he determines he wants to come out after his Freshman year and that is Hassan Whiteside who is a 7ft 235lb center out of Marshall.  He has a 7' 6" wingspan and is an explosive leaper.  The comparison on nbadraft.net is Marcus Camby/David Robinson.  Whiteside is raw offensively but he is a defensive force that is averaging 12.5 pts 9.4 rebounds and an astounding 5.6 blks in just 24 minutes a game.  If you think those blocks are impressive he is up to 7.2 blks per game in his last 5 including a 14pt 14 reb 10 blk and 20pt 12reb 8blk game in his last 2.

Recently both nbadraft.net and draftexpress have written profiles on him.  He will have some interesting tests in the next week with tough games against W. Va tomorrow, UAB saturday and Memphis next Wednesday.  Imagine him and Ibaka together on the front line, now that is what i call protecting the basket.

This post does not reflect the views of the staff of Welcome to Loud City or SB Nation. However, it was made by one of the members of the Welcome to Loud City community, so there is a large chance the above post is extremely ballin'!

bummer.

couldn’t find that much video footage on him aside from his high school days… even then though, you can see his potential and he seems very aggressive and fired up. him and ibaka would probably wreak havoc…

big-time. he could be top 5 this year if he comes out as he as much upside as anyone not named wall and i think nbadraft.net has him listed at 1 next year now.

Repeating History

I don’t know exactly what the ratio here is between “New Thunder Fans” and “Ex-Sonics Fans” (not that I am condemning one as better than the other), but as an “Ex-Sonic Fan” I think I have to warn you: The Sonics stunted the development of this franchise by taking 3 straight 7-foot projects in 3 straight drafts. Their names? Robert Swift, Johan Petro, Saer Sene. You ever heard of any of them? Case in point.

We took Mullens in Round 1 this year. One project big man at a time is enough. Whiteside could be good, but OKC isn’t the right place for him right now. We’re a burgeoning contender…we need players that can start helping us immediately. Just cross your fingers and hope that Cole Aldrich slips to us.

you mean like Ibaka the year before? oh i guess he doesnt count cause he will pan out?

The difference is that Swift was high schooler, Petro and Sene were wishful thinking especially Sene. Whiteside can help us immediately on the defensive end.

by mleetch352 on Jan 20, 2010 6:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

just saying the difference in Rick Sund and Presti is something not accounted for in this analysis. i remember very well the disasters that were swift (wanted al jefferson), petro (wanted simien who never produced), sene (wanted brewer). lets also not forget while solid still significant mistakes with collison and ridnour when they had two lotto picks (wanted west and barbosa who fell on draft night)

terrible point

only because of the last sentence. Aldrich is a joke. I mean if you want a somehow even stiffer Chris Kaman without the offensive skills, then sure, have at him. This years draft is deep in power forwards. Not centers. We will take one of those power forwards and then take our chances with another ‘project’ center. That’s a luxury we have now. We can take a chance here and there now. Personally I see Aldrich as just as big a risky pick as any of the other centers. Pittman and Jordan. Dexter and Jerome. That should be all we come out of draft night with, rookie wise.

by NSU Stud on Jan 20, 2010 8:18 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

oh and when I say Pittman,

I consider him a power forward in the NBA even though he plays center in college.

by NSU Stud on Jan 20, 2010 8:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

This year’s draft is deep in skinny big men who are a few years a way from being able to contribute in the NBA….Ed Davis, Jon Henson, Aminu, Devin Ebanks, etc. Cole Aldrich is built like a truck at a legit 6’11, and isn’t afraid to get physical with anybody. He’s also an athlete, and would give us a shot-blocking presence that Collison, Green and Kristic don’t give us around the rim (Ibaka is great though). I don’t know what Kansas games you’ve been watching if you think he’s stiff, and his offensive game is just as good as Kaman’s was when he came out of Central Michigan. FYI, if Aldrich turns into Kaman down the road, then he’d be a steal where we should be drafting.

Mieetch352, you’ve got a point…Presti is a much better player evaluator than Rick Sund. That isn’t an argument for Whiteside though. If I heard Presti say he’s willing to trade into the top-5 for a 21 year old freshman, then I would hop on board because I trust his judgement. We should have two picks in the 20’s this year (ours and the Suns’), and I just feel like Presti is gonna want to produce substance for next season with those—not another project (like he did with our pick in the 20’s last year).

by illfreaky911 on Jan 20, 2010 8:37 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

i dont see any way henson comes out. ebanks is more of a 3 than a 4. i wouldnt bank on the suns making the playoffs with the way they are going right now and with teams like memphis and no being right there on the outside looking in at the moment.

i’m not saying he should be the guy, i’m saying he shouldnt be discounted cause there is fear of past failures in developing bigs.

Whiteside so far 16pts 2 reb 2blks with 12 min left vs WVa.

Kaman has been around how long?

I live with a huge KU fan and watch more KU games then I care to admit. Aldrich is all the hype for two reasons:
1-He plays for KU. Period. Decent players on great teams haven’t ever been drafted for the teams success over their own right? Please.
2-There isn’t a lot of competition. This years draft is full of power forwards and over-sized small forwards. There are maybe 3 or 4 legit center prospects this year. I’m stretching even for that many. When Dexter Pittman is the 3 or 4 best Center coming out, it’s not a good year for centers. I love Pittman. Actually want to draft him for the PF spot, but he is not a center even though he plays that position in college.

I’m sorry but Aldrich won’t come in and produce immediately. He will be riding pine for at least a year. We are a playoff team now. The days of drafting players that WILL be good or COULD be good are over. By that I mean that we are no longer looking to the future. We need to come out of the draft with someone who is ready to play now. If that isn’t possible then we need to get one through free agency and continue to develop young guys like Ibaka. I don’t personally see the prospect we need in this years draft. I think David Lee or (preferably)Chris Bosh need to be at the top of our wish list. Then I believe some local stand outs need to be drafted for depth. Dexter Pittman, Jerome Jordan, and Damion James should all be looked at very closely.

But I mean if you want to get Aldrich and wait 5 years for him to possibly produce like Kaman, then go for it. Personally,11pts and 10rbs don’t cut it as an elite prospect. Kaman is only doing well on a crap team without Blake Griffin. So dream for that I guess. Aldrich is nothing more than Nick Collison with 2in sneakers on. I love Nick too. But that’s not what we need. We need a presence inside. Not another big role player. We already have Collison, Krstic, and Mullens. At least 2 of those players are already as good or better than Aldrich.

I’m not saying to avoid Aldrich like he is death, but I also don’t think we need to go out of our way to get him. He will be a 1 or 2 year prospect just like any of the others this year. He’s been at KU how long now and still isn’t living up to his hype.

That is all.

by NSU Stud on Jan 27, 2010 8:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i agree with ill.

Why take another center in the upcoming draft after just getting mullens? I say try to land an established solid big man via free agency or by trade (we don’t really need both first round picks) to fill our need in that area, then I’m still say jan vesely would be a great fit to backup durant. They’re fairly similiar if I’m not mistaken.(Obviously durant being much more dangerous) I think vesely has more of a post game though, (I would hope so at 6’11"), but they’re both tall, fairly thin, good off the dribble, both not scared to take it to the basket and of course, both are great at 3’s. Anyone else like vesely?

Trade out of this years draft

I would like to see the Thunder trade all 3 of our picks this year and try for high picks for the next years draft. We would be better off to stagger these new contracts by another year rather than draft someone who will sit on our bench. This will also give the young players that we already have time to develop and give us time to evaluate what we have and who is going to workout and what we are going to have to add.

by Scapegoat on Jan 21, 2010 2:02 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

tough to do

It is usually impossible to turn any number of later round picks into a high pick. You will see veteran players traded for high picks, but almost never more lower picks for a higher pick. Every team knows that high picks are invaluable.

by michaelfox99 on Jan 25, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Draft

We could trade our first round picks to a team that we think is going to be in the lottery next year and hope it works out better than the trade with the suns. If we keep our second round pick we could draft a foreign player and leave them overseas to develop like with Ibaka.

by Scapegoat on Jan 21, 2010 2:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

if pace keeps up the suns will be lottery bound this year.

by mleetch352 on Jan 21, 2010 3:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Scapegoat, you've got an interesting point.

If we obtain all of our talent too quickly, then we will surely lose a key piece or two when everyone needs to re-sign.

Presti would be smart to set up an off season in the distant future where he would not have to renegotiate contract.

Remember Presti loves the word “sustainability”.

Your friendly neighborhood Loud City resident.

1st round pick

you could draft a foreign guy this year and stash him overseas in the 1st round like they did with ibaka.

by ThunderHorn on Feb 4, 2010 9:56 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i agree.

That would be a tough chore trying to juggle too many expiring contracts the same year, especially if it happened consecutive years. With the “surprise” success they’re having this year, I’m starting to imagine they don’t feel the same need to bid for a high profile free agent this coming offseason. They could snag david lee or brendan haywood and still vastly improve without the huge dent in the wallet…as long as they’re able to balance the contract around durant’s and green’s coming up next year…

by tron solo on Jan 21, 2010 11:47 PM CST via mobile reply actions   0 recs

I love David Lee, but we can’t get him in this crazy offseason. All of the teams (Nets, Knicks, potentially Bulls) that are going on a firesale in hopes of landing one of the big fish (LeBron, Wade, Dirk, Pierce, etc.) are going to panic into using their large cap space on second tier free agents if they miss their top target (like Detroit did this year with Gordon and Villanueva). I could see Lee getting vastly overpaid by someone like the Nets if they miss LeBron, and Presti isn’t the type to get into an irrational bidding war.
Love the idea of Haywood though (even though we’d have to get rid of Etan Thomas—they have a serious feud stemming from Washington and couldn’t coexist).

by illfreaky911 on Jan 22, 2010 12:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

im sort of the believe that if they wanted lee last year was the time to go get him because the knicks were not going to risk salary next year on him. right now he has improved and they are probably using him as a fallback if they only get 1 big name and also using him to entice said superstar that there is some talent potentially still there.

by mleetch352 on Jan 22, 2010 5:36 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

true.

David lee could potentially land some pretty big bucks if the right teams get desperate enough after whiffing on one of the elites… But I didn’t really picture etan staying around more than a year anyhow. Ibaka has clearly taken his minutes and I would imagine they’re planning on trading him at this point. I would really like to land haywood though. Guy’s a beast…
