The OKC Tankers...
Ball Don't Lie recently mentioned OKC while pondering if the Cavs tanked to score LeBron many moons ago.
The Cavaliers did tank the 2002-03 season. Much in the same way the New Jersey Nets are tanking right now, and the Sacramento Kings tanked last year. Everyone's current darlings, the Oklahoma City Thunder, tanked last year, the year before, the year before that — and by not signing any money on free agents last summer, one could argue that they're tanking this year, despite the team's playoff potential.
These teams are rebuilding. They're looking down the line, cutting costs, and focusing on developing young talent at the expense of minutes or even roster spots for established, veteran players. Usually those established, veteran players, are pretty crummy. Even if they do drop 16 a game.
What are your thoughts? Obviously if we were tanking, we didn't try hard enough because OKC couldn't draft Griffin. Dime ponders what if Griffin stayed home?
What if the hometown team got its chance for the storybook beginning, with Memphis second, Washington third, and L.A. fourth? … Playing the LeBron-in-Ohio role for the Thunder at the box office, Blake doesn’t even have the pressure of saving the franchise because Kevin Durant is already there. With defenses focused on KD, Blake puts up 17 points and 10 boards a night and wins Rookie of the Year … The Grizzlies take Thabeet second, and Washington trades the No. 3 pick to Minnesota, who takes Rubio. (He still doesn’t play in the NBA in ‘09-10.) But able to land a slightly better player in the deal, the Wizards get off to a good start and Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton are too happy to have a play-gunfight … The Clippers decide to go with Jordan Hill at No. 4, and hire Mo Taylor as a special assistant in charge of teaching him the ropes of being a bust.

If they are tanking...
they sure are hiding it well. Anyone catch that game against the Spurs last night. They definitely seemed to be taking that one off. Pfft….
Who would we be tanking for? Wall? You mean the freshman PG/SG from Kentucky? Yeah that’s it. It’s not like we just spent the last 2 years drafting those exact positions. If there was a Dwight Howard-like player in this years draft then I would say maybe they are. And I would support that decision fully. Pfft….
Get used to it Thunder fans. As a Sooner fan also, I know that the Thunder will experience the same love/hate that the Sooners did while re-establishing themselves earlier this decade. That’s to say, people love a winner, until they win too much. Then the hate flows. This is only the beginning. Gotta love it!
love/hate...
I agree they are not tanking this year at all. Plus, there really is no reason to tank at this point.
I’ve never got the whole love hate thing. This way I see it, if you’re a fan you will root for the team/players no matter what bone headed decisions they make. I always believed in the Thunder. Even last year. I guess that makes me a homer, but I’d rather be a homer than a band-wagoner. Maybe I haven’t been a serious sports fan long enough to understand love/hate fans (like the Sooners have).
So all the negative buzz about players like Westbrook and Green make no sense to me. If you root for this team, you want to see the players get better and succeed. Call me crazy but my favorite MLB team is the Oakland A’s from the early 90’s (steroid bash brothers Conseco or McGuire included). I still can’t seem to hate those guys.

I think he makes a good point about the last three seasons but not really much thisyear . Presti wants to build a contender not a playoff team….. Two different things! I think now we are a playoff team I can see only one player that will make us a contender(bosh) no one else really… If we can’t get him then why break the bank? David lee is good but won’t do much in terms of contention … Just not dominant on a consistant basis( I.e. Howard) . Presti is not tanking but he’s not gonna get us stuck the was the nuggets are…. I don’t think will ever will a championship.
How the hell did that happen? I am Trailblazer fan to the core but I love me some OKC THunder!!! Must be the Hometown pride I feel.

wow
So, just because our team wants to stay financial sound we are tanking? The Thunder are trying to build a team the right way: through drafting smart and signing cheap quality players who complement the young guns. Just because almost every other NBA team jumps on the opportunity to waste tons of money on idiotic contracts doesn’t mean Presti will follow suit.
Obviously teams tank.
I’ll never understand the optimists who insist that teams never tank. I remember that at the end of last year, Craig Humphreys and Bobby Thompson vehemently insisted that the Thunder weren’t tanking at the end of the last year. If you sit your best players in favour of “young talent”, then I call that tanking. Especially when lottery spots were as closely contested as they were. 2 More wins, and we would have leapfrogged Minnesota and Memphis and grabbed the 6th most likely to advance slot. Granted, the Grizzlies had that slot and moved up to 2nd, but that’s beside the point. Lower is better.
Now, I’m not saying that teams start off the season and say, “Alright, lets aim for under 30 wins this year, because we need a pick.” They need some sort of way to make money, and if their team is making a playoff run unexpectedly, then they won’t mess with it. But if you’ve got 20 or less games to go, you’re near the bottom of the standings, and a few wins or losses could drastically alter your lottery chances, throwing in a Robert Swift, a DJ White, a Damien Wilkins, or a Shaun Livingston suddenly seems not so bad. Neither does sitting out a Kevin Durant or a Jeff Green with a sore ankle. Neither does leaving the backups in towards the end of the game and watching your team fall behind on the scoreboard. It’s tanking. There’s no way around it. You can tell me about “preparing these guys for 4th quarter situations” all you want, but when is Shaun Livingston ever gonna be in a NBA 4th quarter situation again? Heck, the only guy who’s still here who was part of that tanking is D.J. White, and it would take a massive slew of injuries, an extraordinary situation, or another case of tanking in order to put him in another NBA 4th quarter situation. I mean, if what we did last year wasn’t tanking, then what is? Do we have to play a roster full of Kevin Willis clones? Or bring Wilt Chamberlain out of his grave to play as a zombie? Or sign me to a 10 Day Contract?
But this year, I don’t think anybody was planning on tanking. The Thunder need to start winning some games to catch the city’s attention, and most of the pieces are in place. They knew they couldn’t have another 20 win season. At the same time, there really wasn’t a lot out there to sign in Free Agency. Who were they supposed to get? Rasheed Wallace? Would that have helped? I think the statement about this year was just poorly thought out by BDL (something which I rarely say).
So, yeah. There’s my 2 cents.

Those are some big cents.
Or sign me to a 10 Day Contract?
Ha! Shoot, they can sign me too. I need the income.

I guess the genius who wrote this article forgets the year we got KD in the draft we had Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis, wow what tanking done there. We only got Green by giving up a hall of famer who helped lead the C’s to a title and if tanking means not wanting to pay Rashard Lewis a max deal then call me a tanked any day. The following year we had what teams have when your two best players are rookies, growing pains. Besides what good did “tanking” do since we had the second worst record and ended up with the 4th pick. Last year if we wanted to tank the year, tell me why we fired PJ after starting 1-12, why not let it get to 2-20? Why did we not just fold every game that Jeff and KD missed instead of going 4-1 in that stretch. I believe this team was 5-31 at one point last year which is about where NJ is now and yet the team decided to win 18 more games the rest of the year, what a lousy job of tanking that was considering the clear cut number 1 prospect in the draft was the power player we need and oh yea he was from Oklahoma.
The fact we have so much talent is not via tanking but great business moves in the swapping Kurt Thomas around moves we netted 2 1st’s already and whatever ends up being PHX’s slot this year. If we really wanted to tank why did we deal a 1st round pick for Thabo last year which ended up significantly helping this team defensively and in turn winning more game last year. what a joke.
Starting Over
We did insure we would have a bad record for a few years but we got rid of an old player that was making a ton of money that wasn’t going to take us to the playoffs. And Lewis was signed away by the Magic. We wanted to go young and build a team through the draft that we could win with for years to come.
