I sort of mentioned this in a discussion a couple days ago but wanted to flush the idea out a little more. There are some very good players out there in the FA market both restricted and unrestricted that are not getting the deals they want from the market. Im not sure that any of them fit our needs exactly as many of us would like them to, but with all the cap space we have this year and all the cap space that teams have created for next season in the hopes of signing big name free agents im wondering if a slightly altered strategy might not be a bad idea. With players like David Lee, Sessions, Ray Felton and Big Baby Davis to name a few as players i believe if teams had more flexibility that would have significant interest from around the league i have been postulating in my mind the idea of signing some of these players if only to really use them as trade chips going forward this season or next offseason.
Signing a Felton or a Sessions for a deal that is around what Earl's deal was especially with Sessions cause i believe Milwaukee is inclined to let him walk with how Jennings played last week in Vegas allows us to bring a player capable of being a starting point in this league which is always a valuable trade chip and if he can be signed for 6 mil or so it makes him a relatively cheap one. Big Baby Davis is being talked about with numbers like 3-4 million which while i dont love his game is cheap for what he showed he can produce and no one in the league ever has enough bigs. I think Lee's numbers speak for themselves even though i hate his defense but at 7 million i would take him over 8.6 for Varajeo.
Im just thinking in terms of taking advantage of the salary cap system as it exists with all these teams pressed against the luxury tax and not wanting to pay the penalties to keep this young talent that we can bring some of it in and spin it off later to fill more pressing needs and as always potentially pick up more draft picks. It is potentially a risk cause there is no guarantee that players can be dealt but there have been a significant number of trades this offseason that says to me it is possible and if you are talking about talent at reasonable prices the value is significant.
