millsap v griffin
This may seem sort of random amidst all of the free agency chatter going on the past couple days, but I felt I had to post a question after reading many of the posts on here. Many on here are opposed to signing PF Paul Millsap to a long term (and expensive) deal, because you have jeff green. However, would that have stopped you from selecting Blake Griffin in this years draft had you received the opportunity? Green would be moved, either traded or coming off the bench I would assume, so I guess I wanted to know why that was. I don't mean this in any sort of negative way, I myself would consider myself a new Thunder fan (livingston is and always will be my boy, and i love the young talented roster). Millsap is shorter, but is a proven rebounder and low post banger. Thoughts? Anything I missed/didn't think of?
This post does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff of Welcome to Loud City or SB Nation. However, it was made by one of the members of the Welcome to Loud City community, so there is a large chance the above post is extremely ballin'!

Probably because Griffin would equate to a huge draw
and interest from the fanbase, as well as some additional national coverage. Additionally, Griffin would have been financially cheaper than whatever Millsap is likely to cost at this juncture. Furthermore, Griffin would probably be less averse to sharing time as the backup to Green at PF, whereas you have no such luxury with Millsap. Just some of the surface level obvious points.
Millsap is good,
but comparing him to Griffin would be like saying a few years back, sign Richard Jefferson or draft LeBron James.
relax
its not a straight comparison….its millsap, harden, mullens, green and one of next years 1st vs griffin since that is what some people here were willing to give up for griffin.
So its not one or the other. personally i take the group over the one player.

How about Millsap vs. D.J. White?
White
Height: 6-9 Weight: 251 lbs. PER – 19.8
Millsap
Height: 6-8 Weight: 245 lbs. PER – 18.6
Hard to compare the two since White hasn’t had as much NBA time. In college White (2.8) blocked better that Millsap (2.3) per 40 minutes. Millsap (14.4) rebounded better that White (10.5). Millsap (21.0) scored more points a game than White (19.4). But White could cost $6M less.
Thoughts?

no offense but this PER crap is really starting to annoy me
that’s like me saying how did one person play the last 6 minutes of a tight game vs how did they play in garbage minutes where no one plays defense

case and point is guy we have talked about Gortat
07-08
6 games 6.8 min 47% shooting .16 stl/g.16 blk/g 2.67rb/g .3 asst/g 3 pt/g PER 20.03 which by the way made him nearly as good as dwight howard that year according to this formula at 22.
08-09
63 games 12.6 min 57% shooting .3 stl/g .8 blk/g 4.5 rb/g .2 asst/g 3.8 pt/g PER 17.04
Does ANYONE want to tell me he was a better player in 07-08 than last year or is this stat at least when it comes to reserves skewed heavily to the smaller sample size being projected outward.
If you want to tell me that if DJ White played 30 min for Utah last year including when boozer was out he was going to put up the same numbers thats fine or actually according to PER his should be better, but lets not act like because of the stat we believe that. Could he be a better value, sure, but he if he is on the floor with KD, Thabo, Westbrook, and Kristic is not going to have the same pt or reb per minute averages he got playing in the meaningless games down the stretch where he could be more involved and thus inflate those types of averages.
Not to be a dick about it but i do have one more just for humors sake…we all remember Sene.
End of the year last year he played with the Knicks. B/w the knicks and us he played in 6 games.
His PER was 33.

Funny.
I just tossed that out there to see what people would say. Obviously their NBA stats are not comparable, but I really do question if Millsap is that much more valuable than White.

Proven commodities are always more valuable than unproven players.
Vinny Del Negro Offensive Gameplan, Part 1
-When there's less than 30 seconds left in the game, that's me with my hands cupped around my mouth yelling.
"BEN! SHOOT! SHOOOOTTTT!!! WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO ME?!?"
-This segues nicely into my Timeout Management classes - order now!
then please just say that
i can get down with the argument that he is not worth another 6 million, but at the same time that argument only really matters as far as im concerned 3 years down the line when we need to be resigning people. we dont get to carry over cap space, so if you just want to save it for our owner next year, that’s cool, but to use a BS stat i believe to show that white was more efficient that some will use to say he might be better lets not get crazy.
The place where White can become value is if he plays and then we either look at him as a long term part of the future/rotation or makes himself into a cheap trade chip that is desired by others.
