Paul Millsap or No Paul Millsap

Paul Millsap?

I don't really like the fact that the Thunder are interested in Paul Millsap because where would you put him? Yes, Paul Millsap is young and is a great rebounder and a big defensive presence (what this team needs) but where do where play him? At PF (Jeff Green's position) and bring Green off the bench?Jeff Green wouldn't be as productive off the bench and plus I think he personally will be a better player than Millsap next year.  It would be a waste of money to sign for as much as they are talking about and bring him off the bench. Plus he is only 6'8" so putting him at center is not an option. He just doesn't fit in. Plus he will be very expensive (some sources say as much as $60M for 5 years! Thats $12M a year! I would rather pay that in the future to someone like Jeff Green or Russell Westbrook.

Other Options

I think trading for a guy like Marcus Camby would give us a veteran presence at the center position and would lead this team in the right direction for future years to come. Of course Camby wouldn't be part of long-term plans but he could be a good veteran who teach this team things that they could use in a couple years when they are great and help them figure out how to get back on the winning side of things. Camby's contract is up after this next season so the Thunder would just let him go or maybe even trade him if Sam Presti can get something interesting. Or maybe even sign Gortat if you can get him because a lot of teams are extremely interested in Gortat and he could start at center and be great for the Thunder.

Well written.

Unfortunately, Camby is out of the equation because of the Zach Randolph trade with the Grizzlies. I’m fine with Green and Millsap sharing the power forward position. Yet obtaining a quality center would still be a need.

I'm not a fan of signing Millsap

I think OKC is better off either signing Gortat or not signing anyone at all. Gordon is obviously a terrible idea and I think Sam Presti is smart enough to not pay around 10 mil a year for an undersized streaky shooting 2 guard who plays little defense after just spending the #3 pick on a player who plays the same position.

I don’t think this team should overpay for Millsap and I think we would have to in order to sign him away from the Jazz. The first reason is simply cap space. OKC is going to need plenty of it in the coming years when it comes time to resign KD and JG and then RW the year after. Also I’m not sure where Millsap would fit in with this team. Some people have suggested signing him saying that he could give us 18 and 10 on a regular basis, I don’t see that happening at all. This year he averaged 13.5 and 8.5 in 30 minutes and his minutes aren’t likely to increase a great deal. If you want to make the argument that he is young and going to obviously improve then the same could be said for JG, the current starter at the position who averaged 16.5 and 7 in 36 min a game. I’m not sure paying over 6 mil a year for another undersized 4 is the best idea when you have a rapidly improving JG currently starting along with young talent in Ibaka and White who haven’t had an opportunity to show what they can do yet. OKC is better off not spending any money for a PF and seeing how White and Ibaka develop this year and then if need be address the situation next offseason either through FA or one of the 2 likely lottery picks they have. OKC isn’t going to compete for a title this year and I think this year will be better spent evaluating some of the young talent on this team as opposed to stunting their growth by signing a player who in my opinion will only marginally improve the team and could potentially hurt the team’s ability to resign their young core in the future.

While I don’t think Gortat is going to develop into a stud, if we could get him at the right price he is a solid option at center. Kristic and Collison are both best served at the 4 and signing Gortat would allow Collison to switch back to the 4 for good (assuming he isn’t traded) while allowing Kristic to get minutes at both the 4 and 5 while BJ develops. Ideally BJ shows great promise and becomes the starting 5 within 2-3 years and then Gortat is still a great backup for the final 2 years of his deal. I just think OKC needs to take the time to develop and evaluate the talent already on the roster (especially with 2 likely lottery selections next year) before all of the available cap space is spent on other players who may or may not be better than what is already on the roster. Just my opinion though

McDyess

If we are interested in Millsap then we should try to get McDyess instead. He is the same player but with a ton of experience to teach Jeff Green with and he will be cheaper. I guess if they have other plans for Jeff Green than at Power Forward and want Millsap to possibly be the long term answer there, then get him. But if they just want a beast on the glass and someone to defend in the post then I think McDyess is the better option. Save some money and get a great locker room guy. I think signing a mentor for Green is key for his development at the Power Forward position.

i like it

i like this idea, unfortunately McDyess is going to sign with a contender, Cleveland, Detroit, Orlando, LA, SA for part of the MLE or the vet-min to have a chance at a title. No way he even listens to calls out of OKC.

Also

McDyess can play Center. He did it in Detroit. I don’t know I just love McDyess. He is a good player all around.

In Sam Presti I trust

lol, I think Millsap would be a good starting PF. Green could be a great 6th man in the NBA someday. Those “tweener” guys usually are. They get lots of minutes as a 6th man and are invaluable to their team – someone like Jason Terry or James Posey, etc. They just don’t quite fit the mold at a particular position.

Personally I wouldn’t be upset with getting Millsap, Lee, or Gortat. Camby in a trade would be okay too. I think we need to bring in additional talent at the 5 and 4. We have enough budding talents from the 1 through the 3.

It’s hard to find a perfect fit for any kind of signing. Based on Presti’s history though, I’m guessing he’ll find the best deal he can and bring in another talented piece. Based on his history, I’m skeptical that I’ll be appalled by a free agent signing that he makes. But we shall see…

At the very least...

Signing Millsap means we strengthen our bench depth, which is also a weakness.

Exactly

All the various possibilities mentioned (Millsap, Lee, Gortat, some other big) have their benefits. It comes down to how much cash we have to through their way and over how many years. If Millsap comes at an affordable price, then there’s absolutely no reason not to pony up and pay to grab a young promising PF. If that means Green finds himself in the 6th man role, then so be it — it’s not like the PF starter spot was guareenteed or something, and at this point we really don’t know if he’d substantially improve, do better as a starter, fall off the face of the Earth, or anything else. You can’t improve a team based on unknown conjecture. Besides, the bench could use more depth.

pretty much all depends on what Presti thinks of Green.
