John Bryant - Second round sleeper?
So I was playing around with this spreadsheet of draftee stats (by Brett of Hoopinion, h/t Truehoop), and one player leaped up at me. Senior John Bryant of Santa Clara.
Age: 22 / Height: 6'11" / Weight: 275 / Center
31min / .65 TS% / 23.6 PTS on 15.0 FGA / 5.5 ORB / 12.9 DRB / 18.5 TRB / 3.3 BLK / 3.2 TO / 3.3 PF
*All stats pace adjusted per 40min
Those stats aren't a one year fluke. Bryant will be graduating from Santa Clara with the team records in rebounds (1152), blocks (246) and points (1667). Now, obvious small-school caveats apply; Bryant's numbers are pretty spectacular – comparable and often favorable to Griffin's or Blair's or Hansborough's – but let's not forget that he was playing in the WCC.
On the other hand, he's shown a commitment to work ethic and fitness, dropping over 90 pounds since entering school as a freshman and doing a good job of keeping the weight off. In his only youtube highlight video, he shows a nice back-to-the-basket offensive game with decent footwork and an effective up-and-under move. He's no athletic beast, but he's got solid fundamentals and the size to make them work. He seems to have his head on straight.
Now, here's the thing I can't figure out: he's on no one's board. He wasn't invited to the combine. He's not on any mock drafts that I can find. It's pretty difficult to find any draft scouting reports on him. Honestly, I don't get it. Bryant's a super-productive, hard-working big man with the only knocks being his lack of athleticism and the fact that he didn't get to play regularly against stiffer competition. It occurred to me that maybe in the few games against bigger schools that he might have been exposed, but no; looking at his game log he held his own just fine.
So... anyone got the dirt on this guy? What am I missing? Or am I right in thinking that he could be a great second round pickup?

Did he ever play a game without cement shoes on?
because dude looks slow. Like the second coming of Aaron Gray, except homeless. Granted he does have that one nice pivot up-and-under move, so I’ll give him props there. But in reality I look forward to seeing him battle John Edwards in the D-League next year.

Yeah...
He’s not gonna be playing above the rim much, I’ll give you that. But in the second round, I’m pretty amenable the guy with the huge frame, good post moves, and great numbers. Especially over the all-athlete no-skills player. Conditioning is the easiest thing to bestow on the motivated player.

Agreed in that regard....
but his athleticism didn’t look like it would match the NBA par. Just a bit too slow and too few hops. I’m not sure most teams could get by with an “Offense-only” bench PF/C either. Usually you want your back-up PF/C to provide some defense and that youtube video ain’t proving much to me when he’s battling guys 6 inches shorter for block-outs.

Maybe this is all true.
I just think it’s odd that no one seems interested in even finding out. He’s not being invited to workouts and wasn’t at the combine. It’s not inconceivable that he could be a good bench center in the NBA. A frame that large has a lot of potential defensively, especially if you put him on a speed/agility/core regimen. The fact that he’s already lost 90 pounds should say something about his ability to stay on a program. Ok, so his competition was weak and undersized… he did what you would want him to do: he destroyed them. It seems natural to me that a few teams might be interested in bringing him in and seeing how he responds to banging against some NBA-ready bodies.

Okay, Okay....
you make a good point. No sense in shooting down the prospect before he plays a little. Here’s hoping he gets a camp invite or plays in the D-league for a year.

It is sad that the spreadsheet only has 4 centers.
I really wished Monroe would have stayed in this draft.
Also Known as "4D" one step beyond 3D

No 2nd round pick for OKC
You may already know this, just throwing it out there.

Oh, weird.
I thought we had the Suns’ or the Spurs’ for some reason. It’ll be interesting to see if any teams invite him to camp as an undrafted FA; it doesn’t look like he’ll get taken in the second by any teams.

defense
during the season he average 2.6 blocks per game and 13 rebounds per game. What else does he need to do to prove defense?

He needs to do it against good teams maybe?
Or at least athletic bigs or teams with tall guys.

I'm 6'2"....
and I can average 3 blocks a game against a team full of guys who are 5’5".
