Thunder Select Harden 3rd; Trade For Mullens from Dallas

The Oklahoma City Thunder selected James Harden with the 3rd pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. Some time transpired and then they drafted Rodrigue Beaubois with the 25th pick. Hold on a second, I'm sure you're saying. This isn't what I see in your title. Ah, that's because the Thunder promptly turned around and swapped Beaubois for BJ Mullens who was selected 24th by the Mavericks.

The big question is, of course, what you think. Luckily we have a poll question for that:

What grade would you give the Thunder's draft? Note: grade it as stated above, barring any further moves or trades.

Welcome to the new thread!

What does everyone think? In the big scheme of things I’m happy. We got a great scorer in Harden who can start at the 2. And we got a project in Mullens who is a risk, but hey, at the 25th pick, who isn’t?

I gave them a B

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 9:40 PM CDT reply actions

Said C

Not so much for what they did even though i cant stand Mullens but more what could have been.

Deal the 3 for the 5 and the 18 u get Harden and Lawson and then nobody cares if Mullens busts.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 9:41 PM CDT reply actions

Harden is a solid safe pick, even though I wanted Rubio or Curry instead.

And there are a ton of players I’d want over Mullens, but we didn’t give up too much to get him, and, hey, if he works out, I’ll gladly be the first to say so.

by sammy on Jun 25, 2009 9:43 PM CDT reply actions

could have had rubio

westbrook isn’t a true point, rubio could have been GREAT for this team. Then ew BJ Mullens? NO! he was a bench player in college, he needed to gack and didn’t. just because we need a center doesn’t mean we need to draft a terrible player. there were very good players still left. O well we will be a 30-45 win team next year. I WOULD HAVE LOVED RUBIO. man he would have been great haha o well, Harden is solid

that would be great

he is going to brow beat minnesota into dealing him to a place he wants to go. this is why you stay away from this kind of prima donna BS that has been floated all through this process. this morning it was minnesota is too cold. grow a set and the cold wont bother you so much since you play indoors

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He's only 18.

I wouldn’t even care if I were Minny.

I'm biased

I don’t know what Presti sees in Mullens, but I hope to find out soon.

I'm glad

We stayed away from Rubio. We don’t need a circus. Trade or no trade. Knicks have nothing we need. LA has nothing we need. Then you stir up Westbrook. Good job Presti we need to keep flying under the radar.

I give it a B

for Harden, not an A because of Mullens.

by ElectricPencils on Jun 25, 2009 9:56 PM CDT reply actions

I gave Presti an A.

He got exactly what we needed. A good character guy in Harden and a center. It’s anyone’s guess whether the center will turn out but you can never have too many young centers under your control.

besides

I’m sure Presti knows alot more than we do. He hasn’t failed us yet.

not sure on the character comment

there were multiple reports during this process that were negative comments on harden’s attitude.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 9:58 PM CDT up reply actions

He sure don't give me that impression

I think the process produces all sorts of that kinda talk because of team’s wanting them to fall.

I'm sure Presti

Has seen medical records and knows contracts demands etc. We will never know all of that. In Presti I Trust!!!

From Canus Hoopus, The Wolves Blog
Love freaks out over all the point guards: “what are we doing????? omg we better trade….what are we doing??? i dont even know”

I'm kinda

asking the same question. Wtf are they doing??

Go Cubs Go!!!!

by cubsluver22 on Jun 25, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's see

They drafted 3 point guards and then traded one of the two that actually wants to go to Minnesota.

sad sad franchise

Makes me appreciate Presti and Bennett that much more.

then he expressed the sane ‘wtf?’ reaction everyone else did. I see him as candid. I also happen to love Love’s game.

we need to have a discussion about the word great

a guy who shoots 42% from the field and 36% from 3 is not a great shooter. he is a scorer who is a volume shooter

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

For comparison, who do you consider a great shooter?

by ElectricPencils on Jun 25, 2009 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions

In this draft

Curry, ellington are the best shooters…budinger could be a notch lower

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Curry's stats from '08-'09

FG% 45.4
3pt. FG% 38.7

I don’t see a tremendous amount of difference in the numbers.

by ElectricPencils on Jun 25, 2009 10:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Curry was the only offensive threat on his entire team.

He was playing pretty much 1 on 5 his entire college career.

Minnesota has two of the next 3 picks

Do they trade one of them? They’ve drafted a lot of players already.

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

they have

but how many are they keeping…maybe only 2.

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:16 PM CDT up reply actions

HAHA

ANOTHER PG…except he is stashed overseas

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:17 PM CDT up reply actions

does dumars have a plan

he has picked budinger and daye r the same player…

Summers and Jerebko play the same spot but much more physical

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:15 PM CDT reply actions

maybe Christmas

I thought he had good workouts though. The Thunder could really use some more depth at shooting guard though. I think one of the two of Weaver and Sefolosha will maybe stick as a deep bench guy, but they could use a guy who has a nose for scoring.

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions

An open ended question here

When do undrafted free agents get signed in the NBA? I know in the NFL they start calling people immediately after the draft. This is an intricacy I never quite picked up.

GS Amare

11:23 PM: RUMOR: Marcus Thornton of the Contra Costa Times reports the Warriors are attempting to complete a trade for Amare without giving up Stephen Curry.

Now that would make an Amare haul valuable and they would instantly start rebuilding if ur talking Biedrins, Wright and Curry

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:30 PM CDT reply actions

From Chad Ford about 45 minutes ago:
Just talked to a source inside the Warriors who said that an Amare Stoudemire deal with the Phoenix Suns was “way off, if it ever happens. It’s nowhere close to being done.”

sure now they take the big white guy instead of taking mullens so we could get maynor…yes im bitter about it

good pick for SA again

he can be like james jones who went to miami as well

Wow lots of college seniors I forgot about coming off the board

AJ Price now. Christmas and Mills still available. Come on Presti! These picks can’t cost very much right now

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 10:37 PM CDT reply actions

exactly

redeem urself for mullens and get a late 2nd round steal…
Christmas, Mills, Adrien

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

He might be waiting to go the UFA route

There are only 7 picks left and lots of good names on the board

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 10:41 PM CDT up reply actions

but if u draft them u dont have to compete with all 30 teams

and agents trying to steer their guy to the best chance of making a squad

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but first the Thunder need a trade partner

Just watch for a team that takes a player that doesn’t seem to fit. We saw that with Budinger and he got traded a couple hours later.

as cheap as colangelo is

not to be crass

but really what is the difference between Mills and Bayless who went in the lotto last year?

by Michael Gleich on Jun 25, 2009 10:46 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

I thought the draft went well

Rubio was really only a superior option (on this team) to Harden if we could trade him, and really, how many people saw him in extended play? I’m sure Presti made an informed decision there.

Curry on the other hand could have been an option, Harden seems to look better and better over time — better than expected measurements, athleticism, and speed. And probably underrated defense. And really, in Presti we trust right?

Mullens .. at 25 — why not? Not my favorite pick, but the only other true option to go for would have been Blair or Young or something. Hard to project at that point what the heck the long-term options are. I’m not sure how much more people were expecting out of this draft.

People seem to always overrate the bulk of players — funny how most of these “gems” completely fall off the radar of most of us within 1-2 years.

Thanks for participating

It was a lot of fun! I’m holding out hope there’s one last move from the Thunder.

by dishingoutdimes on Jun 25, 2009 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Mullens

is a high-risk high reward pick but you get him at 25, if he reaches his potential you could end up with a more athletic Zydrudas, if he busts it sucks but its as if we wasted a lottery pick on the guy.

Being in this situation I think will help him. He’s gonna be around young guys that are all still growing and developing, and he’s on a team with no expectations. With Krstic they can bring him along a little slower.

Would have liked a different pick, there were plenty of guys still on the board, but its not a terrible pick, more of a bummer because what is on the board still, but there are gonna be some good guys that go undrafted.

what do u want to know

older because of the transfer year

somewhere around 24 i believe…had a better junior than senior year. had potential to be late 1st early 2nd last year but thought he could go back and improve his stock
