Blake Griffin Back in Play
Just when you thought it was safe...
...to write off Blake Griffin, reports surface like this:
According to some reports, the Thunder and Clippers may swap picks (the Thunder draft third overall), enabling the Thunder to take Griffin and the Clippers to draft Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio. But again, a lot of that is contingent on the Clippers being able to find a taker for Davis.
The Thunder will need to offer more than #3 overall of course, but the deal will NOT include Durant, Green, or Westbrook. OKC sitting on (2) first rounders this year and (2) first rounders next year have the ammunition to get this done.
A league sources cites:
...Thunder do have is an abundance of future first-round selections. They own two potential lottery choices next season -- their own and Phoenix's -- and a first-rounder in 2011. Two of those choices and this year's No. 3 would likely be enough to land Griffin.
The ramifications of such a deal are clear. The thunder would be able to field a starting 5 capable of getting to the playoffs next year.
Matchup Problems
Talk about nightmares for opposing defenses. The flexibility of fielding both big and small lineups of equal quality from both an offensive and defensive standpoint is huge. Both scenarios offer a dynamic mix of slashers, scorers, and willing defenders.
Tough as nails 'Small ball': Griffin, Green, Durant, Sefalosha, Westbrook
Conventional 'Big Lineup': Kristic, Griffin, Green, Durant, Westbrook.
Fingers Crossed on this one.

Sources on those?
It seems like the same 4 or 5 people are trying to drum up these rumors, and they seem like the same people who are drumming up the Rubio not wanting to go to OKC or Memphis rumors.
I think we will be the subject of trade rumors for awhile, all the way up to the draft.
All that being said, mark me down as being in favor of trading up and giving away some of our future 1st round picks to get it done. Griffin is a once-in-a-lifetime type opportunity for the franchise.
As for the rumors you mentioned, it actually makes sense unlike some of the other rumors. The Clippers realize the Thunder would likely be the most likely team to want to move up for Griffin (obvious reasons), but they also realize the Grizzles want to take Thabeet, so that would set them up to take Rubio, which would be good given their logjam of players in the post.

forgot to mention...
Even if the Clips take Griffin at #1, they may actually go through with it, just to make sure the Thunder take Rubio at #3. Then the teams may swap player rights after the draft and the Clips would probably command a good player or quality future draft pick in return.

It's Darnell Mayberry
He just made it up. It’s also funny that he talks about internet rumors getting out of control but then his article is pretty much no better than the typical fanpost. It’s an interesting offer but if the Clips really think Griffin is the best player in the draft, I’m not sure late lottery picks in 2010 and 2011 are going to make them change their mind and go with Griffin.
Mayberry cites the Chris Webber deal as his example but this would feel more like the Antonio McDyess for Brent Barry and Rodney Rogers deal.

I seen that yesterday...
and I wasn’t impressed then. This isn’t going to happen.

Unlikely to happen.
Future 1st rounders are way too volatile of a sure trading commodity; the Clippers aren’t stupid — they would probably start with a demand of Green + 3rd pick + whatever else, which is more or less likely the starting point for any sort of useful discussion involving this sort of a trade. Especially in THIS draft.

I agree that this is just mostly wishful thinking.
But I disagree with the statement “the Clippers aren’t stupid”.
2010 Seahawks Mock: 1A: Eric Berry S, 1B: Ndamukong Suh DT, 2: Charles Brown OT, 4:Zac Robinson QB, 5: Stafon Johnson RB 6: Will Tukuafu DE, 7: Kerry Meier WR
Also acceptable, trade for Patrick Chung and draft Ed Wang so everyone can Wang Chung tonight.

You have me there
I think I meant: “Even the Clippers aren’t stupid enough to screw this one up that badly”

Can't imagine they'd give it away for less than Green + 3rd + future 1st.
In which case, thanks but no thanks. Also don’t know why they wouldn’t just work something out with Memphis, who would love to get their hands on Griffin just as much as the Thunder, and who, also like the Thunder, aren’t the most natural landing destination for Rubio. Memphis even has cap space to take on salary.

Brought this up a week or two ago and someone (bouzi?) game me a 5% percent chance of this going down. Maybe the Rubio rumblings of location may have bumped it to 10%. Green and 3rd would be too much, add a future 1st would really piss me off.
