Are We the Youngest Team in the League?
Hi guys,
I am from Golden State of Mind. In the Bay Area press and all over the Warriors blog, we are refered to as the youngest team in the NBA, which we are by definition at 24.1 years. But I decided to weight age against playing time instead of just taking a raw average age. I compared the Warriors to the Portland Trail Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, MinnesotaTimber Wolves, and The OKC Thunder.
Here are the results
|
Team |
Average Roster Age |
Actual Playing Age |
Minutes Leader |
|
Golden State Warriors |
24.1(24.3 17 man) |
25.7(25.6 17 man) |
Jackson(30) 1854 |
|
Portland Trail Blazers |
26.3 |
23.8 |
Aldridge (23) 2013 |
|
Memphis Grizzlies |
24.2 |
23.3 |
Mayo(21) 2093 |
|
Minnesota Timber Wolves |
26.9 |
25.0 |
Foye (25) 1986 |
|
Oklahoma City Thunder |
25.5 |
24.7 |
Durant (20) 2197 |

Honestly, I don’t put much stock into actual age averages. I mean 4 of our starting 5 right now are Jeff Green, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, and Kyle Weaver. 2 second year players, and 2 rookies.
As the roster continues to turn over, this teams average age will get younger and younger. One guy can throw off that whole average age thing, so I don’t really know if you can put much stock into that.
There is no question, all five teams mentioned are VERY young teams.

I definetly agree,
The Thunders top 3 guys are all under 22, and Durant is a definite future All-Star and probably Westbrook as well. Collison and Watson are good for filling the roster now, since they are solid vets. And they will be replaced with draft picks and free agents. Of those 5 teams, The Blazers are obviously the most enviable, but in my book the Thunder are second.
Honestly the biggest worry is how much you would have to over pay free agents to come to OKC. Not being a jerk, just a realist.
We will probably need to be patient and let this season play out.

You never know...
Word of mouth alone may be enough to convince someone to sign in OKC. I just ask Chris Paul if he’d like play in Oklahoma City again, I guarantee the answer is that he would. Also, having a guy like Kevin Durant, that other players WILL want to play with going forward. And that’s not even mentioning how great the crowd and fans are in OKC. There’s isn’t a player in the league that wouldn’t love to play in front of a super loud and rowdy crowd each and every night.
Who really knows though? We’ll begin finding out this summer….

I know one thing… Presti will not OVER PAY a free agent to come here… He just wont do it.
We ask 48... We give 48...
Yeah, he seems to really know how to make smart decisions in terms of personnel. You have to love that in a GM.
