3 Team Trade
thinking about who was out there and what this team needs along with injuries and such on other teams I have come up with an interesting 3 team deal that might work and fits under league cap rules.
OKC Trades: D.J. White, Nick Collison, 2nd round pick
ORL Trades: Brandon Bass, Jameer Nelson, Marcin Gortat, 2nd round pick
POR Trades: Travis Outlaw, Andre Miller, Steve Blake
OKC Gets: Bass, Blake
ORL Gets: Outlaw, Miller, Collison, 2nd round pick from OKC (1 we are owed this year, or lowest of 2 we have)
POR Gets: Gortat, Nelson, White 2nd round pick from Orl
Trade from each perspective:
OKC: Collison is not the answer to the backup 4/5 slot and for what he produces is probably slightly overpaid and has 1 year left on his deal. Bringing in Bass allows them to get younger, a hungry energy player who plays very good D and boards, bangs like they need. Playing with Ibaka it would be an excellent energy front court who can rebound and Bass is locked up reasonably priced at 4 mil per. Blake is basically a cap throw-in so it would work for Portland, he is a FA at the end of the year so he could be bought out and go back to Portland if he wanted or anywhere else for that matter, or he could be a decent trade chip at the deadline. This move helps OKC now and in the future without making any huge commitments and even provides more cap space next year.
POR: Portland with all the injuries is in desperate need of big bodies right now and the thing that the injuries have shown most is that Bayless needs more playing time. In this deal they get a true point in Nelson who's question mark is not his game, but his health. If he can stay healthy he is an excellent compliment to Roy as someone who can drive and kick and take away a lot of the ball-handling responsibilities from Brandon. Nelson and Miller have the same amount of years left on their deals so that doesnt hurt them either. Adding Gortat with the injuries to Pryz and Oden gives them a potential shot blocker and rebounder who can fill the 5 spot and allow Aldridge to keep playing the 4. DJ White might have some upside for them as a sort of throw in added extra big body. Eliminating the glut of PG's allows Nate to play Bayless much more and with Outlaw gone then Rudy can get more consistent minutes at the 3 allowing Webster and Batum to grow behind him.
ORL: Orlando would probably hate to give up on Nelson but the fact is that they are trying to compete for an NBA title and his injuries and in and out of the lineup the continuity is impossible to get. Andre Miller is not flashy, but he is effective and on a team that has a bunch of shooters he can be very effective running the pick and roll game, is durable and very consistent. Collison allows for them to replace Bass, the problem for them is they dont have another 7 fter who can play if Dwight gets into foul trouble. Collison most nights in the East could play the 5 spot in limited minutes of relief, but he cant do that against the Lakers if they match up in a Finals meeting. Outlaw would give Orlando another athletic wing player who can shoot the 3. Orlando is able to get out from under a 6-year deal they gave Gortat (while getting some value), get players that can help them win now and reduce some of the log jam of minutes they have in the front court all while becoming more stable in the back court.

Jameer Nelson
isn’t going anywhere. I like the rest of the trade though. But wouldn’t we want Gortat? I’m not much of a fan of Gortat, but I would assume that if we were involved in a trade with Gortat, we would want to be the ones getting him. Good post though.
To be honest, I'd rather have Collison than Bass.

He might have better stats, but....
stats aren’t everything. Nick Collison will very, very rarely hurt this team, especially offensively. he stays down there, tangos with the big men, gets a solid amount of rebounds, almost never misses his shots, et cetera. Brandon Bass will get you more points, but his rebounding is way worse, and he’s going to miss a lot of shots. I haven’t seen Bass in action much, but I don’t think he’s that great of a defender, either. Especially if we’re going to play him at Center. Bass is really more of a Inside Oriented SF/PF, and I don’t think we have room for him to play at the moment. He might be fun to watch for a while for a quick fix, but he’s not the answer to our problems, and I’d rather have Collison in there. And quite frankly, I’d almost rather try out D.J. White in that situation, just to try him out.

Exactly.
Points are one thing — but it depends on where/how those points are scored. For OKC the bigger question there is oriented around providing interior rebounding, defense, and so forth. I’ll stick with Collison for that.
ok i understand where you guys are coming from
but if the goal is to have a dominant frountcourt defender then Collison wont give us that ….. In essence he is a big body who can muster up a few Rbs ….. if in the whole scheme of things we want our center to be that dominant defender and another low post offensive presence then i would gladly sacrifice some D now to acquire that post threat and find a Center to clog the middle latter…. because i know Collison is a scrapper but loosing him will not hurt this team in the long run ….. and isn’t that what we talk about when building this team? Plus for 8mil he just cost too much . He honestly has more value as an expiring contract than as a player……. BTW i <3 Nick too!!!!

For the record
Nick Collison averaged a double double when he was getting 25-30 min a game. Now I know that double double was only 10 and 10 but that still not bad. I don’t know that Brandon Bass has ever accomplished as much. He probabely has never gotten that many minutes either, but my point is the same. Nick is productive based on the minutes he gets. He is boring and doesn’t stand out, but he IS productive. That being said, I am still all for trading him for something that helps. He IS expensive but he shouldn’t just be given away. I just don’t think Bass is much of an upgrade. I personally think Bass and Gortat both have benefited from from strong play in limited roles which makes them look a little better than they actually are in my opinion.
I don't think Orlando would be interested, but nice try.

Not too bad
I think it would be tough for Orlando to pull the trigger. I also see aht you mean about Collison, but he is one of or best veteran players. However, if we can create more cap flexibility, then Im all for it. We still ahve to sign Durant and Westbrook to long term contracts, and I think we still need to get a consistent interior scorer. So we will need all the cap flexibilty we can get.
This trade may not be the answer, but I like your thinking.
ALMOST!
there but you lost me on Orlando trading Nelson….lol…and have JWill torn apart in the playoffs? i can see Mo Williams and Rajon Rondo licking their chops if this scenario would become reality. However, nice try dude, i like it! i just wish Gortat would end up in OKC
