Thunder to Sign Free Agent Guard...Mike Wilks?
Um, who?
From InsideHoops.com
The Oklahoma City Thunder will sign free agent guard Mike Wilks, InsideHoops.com has learned.
Wilks’ agent Bill Neff confirmed to InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner that the team will soon add the 30-year-old veteran, who has career averages of 2.5 points and 1.2 assists per game.
A 5-10, 180-pound point guard, Wilks played for three different teams in the 2007-08 season and was not in the NBA in 2008-09.
Wilks provides backup depth and can contribute behind starter Russell Westbrook, who plays 34.1 minutes per game.
So, we sign a guy who's played 15 games (total) for 3 teams. I'd hardly call him a "veteran." And he's 30.
Seriously?
This is the best we could find? What about Brevin Knight? Heck, I'd almost say signing Iverson would be a better move because I don't see this guy contributing anything.

Trust
One thing I’ve learned is to trust the Great Impresti. I’ll reserve judgment until I’ve seen Wilks play a little.

Entertaining insight into Thunder basketball.
I think "little" is the best word
to describe how much this guy has played.

It looks more like a precaution then anything else
What with Weaver, Ollie, AND Livingston all out right now. I’m going to guess that once two to three of them return Wilks will get cut. Just a hunch.
Mike Wilks
Played for the SuperSonics under Presti, and I think you’d be hard pressed to find a better emergency backup PG. He’s pretty quick, and if nothing else, he can just pass it and not have a negative effect. And as far as Brevin Knight goes, I think Presti went with the devil he knew over the devil he didn’t know.

Umm...
He played THREE games for the Sonics.
And it’s not like his stats were overwhelming.

Games played does not equal...
what Presti knows about Wilks. Through practice and other interactions, I’m sure Presti knows more about Wilks than what we can determine from 3 games.

I realize Presti is the basketball genius
but I’m an educated man, myself, and when I see a 30 year-old guy who has played a total of 15 games over one season for 3 different teams, I can deduce a few things.
Aren’t you curious to know why he was 28 before he ever played a game in the league? Why he was out of the league last year? Why did he not stick with any of those 3 teams for longer than 8 games?
While Presti has done a tremendous job with this team, it’s hard to look at the facts and think “Yeah, this is definitely the best we can do.”
My guess is he’ll be gone before New Year’s Day.

He was out of the league last year because of a torn ACL.
By the way… Wilks has a championship ring if that make you feel any better. :)
What I’m curious about is his game tonight. The guy is from Milwaukee.
Wilks has worn number 29 throughout his career as a tribute to Milwaukee’s 29th Street playground where he grew up playing the game.
I wonder just how much he loves Milwaukee.
I agree, Wilks won’t provide much. He’ll probably be gone before we know it.

Anyone can complain...
… but mostly that comes from not knowing about something.
Wilks has been playing in the NBA pretty consistently since 2002.
His Ring is from the SA Spurs 04-05 season and he played in 48 games – with the spurs he was backup point guard.
As well as his stint with Seattle in 07-08 when they moved to become the Thunder, he played with them during the 05-06 and 06/07 seasons for a combined 57 games.
For the Spurs, he was a 5 min/game guy, for Seattle, he was a 10 min/game guy. I’ve seen him play quite abit over the years – In each 5 min of play, he’s usually good for 1 rebound, 2 points, and 1 assist. – During that time – your starter gets a much needed break, your team plays fundamentally sound ball, and (historically speaking) your team dynamic is improved by a quiet professional who his peers acknowledge is good to work with.
No Drama like you get with AI / No monster salary caps or committments.
Just a Pro – doing his job.
You are correct
I did some more digging after I made the initial posts and found Yahoo wasn’t giving the full story. He has bounced around the league, and it seems as a stop gap, can fill in for a few minutes competently.
That being said, wouldn’t you rather have a legit second team PG rather than a temporary fill-in?
