Cursory thoughts on the first game
The Thunder's opening win over the Kings was nice, but like all single-game analyses it really fails to tell us much about what we should expect out of the Thunder this season. In and of itself however, there are some tidbits to grasp at. We already have a recap/thought-piece from mleetch352, but I figured I'd add to the festivities in my own way.
Joe over at DailyThunder once referenced Dean Oliver's four factor breakdown of what wins games (back in January of 2009). While this isn't a be-all-end-all, it does provide a bit of fun number crunching for an isolated game situation. The four factors and their relative weights:
1. Shoot a high field goal percentage (10).
2. Do not commit turnovers (5-6).
3. Get offensive rebounds (4-5).
4. Get to the foul line frequently (2-3).
Using that as a reference, a brutish and blunt look at the box score turns up some fun information, sprinkled with my own random opinion. The Thunder went 39-76 for a .513 FG percentage (good), turned the ball over 13 times (not so good), grabbed 42 rebounds ... of which 8 were offensive rebounds (okay, all things considered), and got to the line for 20 FTs (not so great). And then we have the fact that OKC also allowed a bottom-feeder team to outscore them 21 to 13 in the 4th quarter -- and really, it doesn't much matter why that might have been the case, when you're playing the Kings. Jeff Green went 4-5 from beyond the arc, accounting for over 5 of 13 of his shot attempts. I guess this is a continuation of the SF-playing-out-of-position-with-perimeter-touch thing they're trying to build upon from last year. It also belies a dearth of post presence that seems to be the big, huge unaddressed hole. On the other hand, Jeff Green also had 3 blocked shots(!). In a huge positive, Westbrook only had 2 TOs to go along with 13 assists ... this is obvious, unrefutable growth -- at least for one (real) game. Also, as per last year: the defense still needs work. But you know what? We won. And the Suns looked pretty darn vulnerable going against the Griffin-less Clippers -- it's a game they were able to pull it out in the last seconds. All in all, it's a promising start to a new season.
Other: Anyone have thoughts on Harden?

Thoughts on Harden.
Well I haven’t taken the time to really look the stats, but here is what I observed last night. Harden is defensively out of sync with the team. He needs to grow out of his old zone mentality. Harden did have a rough assignment last night, which he couldn’t really stop. For a rookie, I think he did fine. I don’t see Sefolosha loosing his starting spot any time soon. Especially if Thabo continues to have good perimeter shooting.
Harden look pretty good offensively. Good shooting over all. I also noticed him grabbing a rebound (or two). Ginobli? No, not yet. But he has potential.

I think it's a good thing
That Thabo is locked up for a bit now — helps that he’s also improving from being an all-defense-no-offensive cog in the wheel to being slightly more multi-dimensional … at least in the early going.
And the bit on Harden needing to grow out of the zone mentality is spot on. Here’s to a shorter learning curve, because he’s getting beat left and right. Against that assignment, it was probably expected — but even in the preseason it was an obvious problem.
thoughts?
i would like to have seen Harden shoot more and do a bit more than he did as well as KD try to get to the line more often, he needs to improve on that “killer” mentality.

Yeah St lunatic
I’m agree he need to learn those veteran moves that rack up points when all momentum is gone…. I love his rebounding from last game … If he can continue to rebound well (7-8) a game and learn those vet moves he has surpassed Carmelo and maybe even LBJ
Harden should keep his change of pace slow man game…. That’s why he was drafted … Not to be what we already hve but to come in and change pace and help with half court offense … He might need the ball in his hand to be effective which can be good when RW0 is out and Ollie/ Livingston is in…
I also think Ollie played because Livingston may have needed a game to relax before he comes in and plays 18 mins a game for 80+ games !!!
How the hell did that happen? I am Trailblazer fan to the core but I love me some OKC THunder!!! Must be the Hometown pride I feel.

Okay, considering Lucky Harden. There is one play that spoke volumes to me. Ollie made an ugly pass attempt to a referee. Why? I don’t know? Perhaps out of the corner of his eye Ollie mistook the gray uniform of the official for a white Thunder jersey. Anyway the official jumped backed and was about to let the ball go out of bounds. At that moment Harden jumped out of bounds to toss the ball back in. Unfortunately Harden’s hustle (Harden’s Hustle, I like the sound of that) was rewarded with a backcourt violation. I was still surprised that Harden was quick enough to put the ball back in play. And people say he is not athletic.
Perhaps the refs should wear the standard white and black stripes?
